Guest nickt Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Hi, just joined the forum, having just bought a 98 Galaxy 2.3 Ghia auto yesterday. The used car dealer told me that the gearboxes on these cars appreciate a warm start, and not to drive straight off from cold. I have found that when pulling away (not particularly sharply), the gearbox hesitates a little, the revs increase, and then the transmission seems to "kick in", resulting in a jerk and then pull away. After a few minutes of driving this seems to stop occurring on pull away. Have any of you guys any experience or advice you can offer, as I'm now becoming nervous about the box, and whether this car should go back. cheers Nick Quote
Guest MATT Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 i would properly say there is something wrong with it, as i have a 1.9TDI auto, and that runs smoothly from the word go - 'Non of that warm up crap' i think the dealer knows this and has said that to try to get out of fixing it. Dave-G Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005  Take it back tomorrow  He's telling you a load of bowlacks :o My auto behaves exactly the same regardless of outside temperature. In my opinion you should not retain the car, but if you do,GET A PARTS AND LABOUR WARRANTY OFF THE DEALER AS PART OF THE DEAL Quote
Guest nickt Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 thanks guys.just as I suspected. I did negotiate a 12 month parts and labour warranty, however, I'm inclined to back this car. I believe I'm within my rights to do this. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 The used car dealer told me that the gearboxes on these cars appreciate a warm start, and not to drive straight off from cold. He's talking through an orifice other than his mouth !First get them to check the transmission fluid level and top up if necessary. Second, check for fluid leaks from the transmission (in the morning, look underneath where you park it overnight). Be prepared to reject the car; however much you may like it apart from this fault, there are others out there that are better. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Sounds like low fluid! the reason he's saying to let the car war up is to allow the fluid get hot and expand to the correct operating level, take it back and get them to check the level and top up or even better replace it Quote
Guest nickt Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 VR6 do you mean replace the fluid or car!!? (great avatar by the way) Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Fluid to start with then the car if necessary, if the fluid is low it cause a few problems, like slow changes, jerky shifts, holding of gears, another member had similar problems and found that his fluid level was low, once he topped it all his problems seemed to disapear! Guest nickt Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 great, thanks for your input! Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 (great avatar by the way) ..and he's given it a good name too (right-click and see  ) Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 30, 2005 Report Posted January 30, 2005 Again it's one I have borrowed  the guy I borrow them from hasnt been on line to answer who the danceing girl is, although VR6Pete says it's his mum  Quote
johnb80 Posted January 31, 2005 Report Posted January 31, 2005 You need to put it in writing, recorded delivery to the MD / Owner of the garage. State that you are rejecting this vehicle because of the following defects and list all of the defects. I would also add what the salesman said re the gearbox and therefore show it was a known fault. Do this a.s.a.p. If the fluid is low it needs to be investigated to find where it's gone. Regards - John Quote
