Guest markt Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 Just wondering if anyone has had unexpected windscreen cracks... Discovered a three inch crack from the bottom left hand corner snaking towards the centre on my 2003 yesterday, with only 14,000km, no bumps or anything that I know of...In fact the crack does not seem to come from anything externally or internally (both sides feel smooth), but embedded within the glass. Dealer quite reluctant to do anything, and the instaclear windscreen I am sure will cost a bomb, even out here in Hong Kong. Does it sound like a manufacturing defect? Quote
Bigjeeze Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 I had three windscreens go like this on my 1997 TDI - All started in the right hand corner and slowly expanded. When I had the new screen put in the guys removed tow plastic wedge things which so far (8 months) has cleared the problem. Sorry - that's all I have! Quote
MrT Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 When my screen cracked from a flying bolt (I saw it coming) there was not a mark on the outside of the glass but the cracks ran up the inside of the glass. I suppose it is the middle layer in the laminated screen that had gone. Quote

I think the idea of a laminated screen is that the middle plastic layer does not break, but holds the glass together when it cracks. I don't know what the insurance policies are like in HK, but in the UK this can be claimed on the policy for about Quote
Guest markt Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 well the dealer managed to find a pinhole where the crack started, next to the corner of the windscreen. Looks like the insurance man is my best bet. Thanks for the help! Quote
