Got in the car to come home from work this afternoon. As the (tdi) engine started, the hazard lamps flashed twice then stopped, followed a few seconds later by the glowplug lamp in the rev counter flashing on and off at about 1 second intervals. Let it do this for about half a minute (with engine running). nothing else seemed wrong. Switched engine off, re-started and no problem.

Is this an obscure warning of some problem, or just a one-off electrical gremlin?

I once had the glowplug light flashing. I believe it means that the ECU has detected a problem. In my case it was a faulty brake light switch. I take it the ECU needs to know when the brakes are applied so takes a signal from the switch. If it doesn't get the signal for a while the ECU decides there is a problem.

I can't quite make the connection with your hazard lights flashing by themselves but I guess it might be worth checking that all your lights are working correctly. Perhaps you have a short between indicators and brake light circuits??

I have just had a similar problem, the glow plug light flashed intermittently.

Garage diagnosed ECU and fault code 02E5 was in the memory, brake light switch intermittent signal.

Anyone had problems with these switches ?. Garage advised me to buy from VW dealer as cheaper and will get the right switches first time.
