Guest Batch_2001 Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Hi, I bought my Mondeo (51 plate, 24K miles) last month from a main dealer, though it isn't a Ford Direct car. All seemed well, but a couple of weeks ago I noticed the engine fan kick in even though I had just been driving 50Mph without any traffic holdups -ususally after 20 mins or so from cold. Intermittently the temprature guage has been climbing towards the red despite doing 70Mph on an empty motorway. It reaches the border of norm and red before I bottle out and stick the fans on hot/max to cool the engine bay. in fact the fan seems to be on when I up the speed of the car (engine working harder I suppose) Obviously it has been back to the garage. No sign of leaks, etc and no errors reported from the diagnostics. Their 'solution', upgrade the EMU. Sound a bit unlikely to work to me..... I live about 60 miles from the garage I bought it from so getting the car to them and back is a nightmare with work and all...Tomorrow when I pick it up if it does it again I'm turning round and dragging the engineer out on a 'test drive'. Any ideas if it in't fixed? I'd guess at sticky thermastat or temp sesor/sender but I have no idea how the Mondeo engine works in that department. Also thought the garage would pick up theat... Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 I'll hazard a guess that the fan is run off a different sensor to the one that drives the temperature gauge, and that your thermostat needs changing. Hope it's nothing more serious, like duff water pump or worse..... Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 I would CERTAINLY recommend a Thermostat change, and the ECU temp sender. Make sure they are original parts, as the Ford thermostat opens at 92deg, where as the 3rd party thermostats open at 88deg. Doesnt seem like a major difference - but fuel economy is a fine balance. The is a post on here about my trails and tribulations of overheating- do the thermostat! Quote
Guest Batch_2001 Posted January 26, 2005 Report Posted January 26, 2005 Thanks for the reply. Suprise suprise the ECU upgrade failed to work (5 miles on the motorway and the engine goes hot). Turned around back to the guarage and asked someone to come out with me to show them. Got a phonecall saying it was the 'stat after all abut they are doing a (garage own) warranty repair on it. So as long as it is fixed I am happy (pick up tomorrow)! Quote
