Nibbles Posted June 2, 2003 Report Posted June 2, 2003 I was looking for some advice on changing the back brake discs and pads. I have already located a good deal for the parts and have a willing mechanic ready to do the job. He has asked about how the handbrake connects on the back ? Can anyone give me some info please. Vehicle is 98 R 1.9 tdi (90) Galaxy. and in the last 6 weeks I have had to change the battery, have a cambelt done (at a Ford dealers) and the MAF done (at a Lucas centre - as recommended by the Ford dealers) so the last thing I needed was to hear metal on metal with the rear brakes p.s. cracking web site for anything Galaxy ish Quote
Nibbles Posted June 3, 2003 Author Report Posted June 3, 2003 OK - hands up, a bit of a leading question from me, and clearly I am not a 'mechanic' and my willing helper isn't either or although he does know his way around brakes , just not the Galaxy type. He had asked if I could find out any info that may prove helpful - Apologies if I have wasted anyones time. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 Don't forget that the Galaxy has rear discs and there are several ways of having a handbrake function, eg separate drum in centre or separate way of applying the pads to the discs.Only had my used Gal a month so don't know what the answer is yet. Must get round to looking for a TIS CD soon. Quote
Mussey1 Posted June 3, 2003 Report Posted June 3, 2003 I changed the rear pads on mine a few weeks ago, not too difficult. You do not have to touch the handbrake as it is self-adjusting and all linkages etc. are attached to the caliper. I also need to change my rear discs at 67000 mls. Looks easy enough, although I have heard that the 8mm hexagon screws that hold on the caliper carrier can be a bugger to remove.Remember it is advisable to bleed the brake fluid from the caliper nipple as any debris in the old fluid may play havoc with the ABS sesor unit. I would add however that I have spoken to a VW mechanic and was told that they would not normally bleed the fluid when changing pads, even though it is recommended!!!!!!! Up to you! Mussey1 :( Quote
Guest Andy Posted June 4, 2003 Report Posted June 4, 2003 OH YES, THANKS FREDT,I have never touched a bleed nipple on a galaxy and i have done 30+said vehicles, retracting the piston does however have a very small possibility of flipping the seals in the master cylinder rendering it U/S,As fred explains it is VERY straight forward print ofF his advice and you will find it very easy.If the bolt holding the disc on is a bit tight the give the disc a good wallop with a big hammer this will shock it into submission. IN FACT IF ANYTHING IS TIGHT WALLOP IT ANYWAY!!!! DO NOT USE STANDARD JACK,WIBBLE,WOBBLE CRACK.CRUNCH...... ;) ;) ;) Quote
Nibbles Posted June 5, 2003 Author Report Posted June 5, 2003 Thanks Andy & FredT.Printed off and all done and dusted last night, at least I have no fear of braking now (gently obviously). The 'mechnanic' has gone back to his exotic stuff now. Most grateful... ;) ;) Quote
