jkspoff Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 I had a dizzy moment yesterday and put just over 2 litres of unleaded petrol in my Tdi  I was in a hurry so told the attendant and then reversed to fill the remainder with diesel........my thought was that because there was so little unleaded in relation to almost 62 litres of diesel it would dilute the unleaded to almost nothing. Am I correct in thinking this.........or should I have got the whole system drained. It seems OK at the moment, no coughing or spluttering at all.....any advice would help.......theres not a lot I can do with it now anyway but just wondered if anyone else had done this before with what results. :( I blame it on my flu bug !! johnb80 Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Don't worry, it will be fine. Years ago before winter diesel, VW used to recommend upto 20% petrol to stop the diesel freezing. Regards - John Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 Yes as said, 2 litres of petrol in 62 of diesel should cause you absolutely no problems at all...but use it all up and re-fill with diesel ASAP, just to make sure ;) Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 blame the flu? I think it's more of a classic TDI driver's ailment! other wise known as an elderly moment ;) dont worry about it as the other have said 2 Ltrs is nothing to worry about Quote
Topbloke Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 general rule off thumb is max 10% of fuel capacity ie 70 litre tank max 7 litres of incorect fuel unless hdi then no mix at all. as already said should be no probs but use 1/4 tank and refill to brim with correct fuel (you are a brave man to admit that you had dropped a clanger) hope that you dont get to much grief from friends for doing it :D :D   Quote
GSMGuy Posted January 24, 2005 Report Posted January 24, 2005 You'll have no probs with that - BUT if you have a PD, I'd be brimming the tank every hundred miles or so for the next 5/600 just to be safe... And a fuel additive wouldn't go amiss -can't be too careful!! Mike Quote
Guest T120 Posted January 25, 2005 Report Posted January 25, 2005 jkspoff Don't worry about that amount its all been described above  , mines had the injectors cleaned with about 6,5ltrs of unleaded petrol :D , actualy got the impression that it might be running better  . Quote
jkspoff Posted January 28, 2005 Author Report Posted January 28, 2005 Thanks for the reassurance, I'll have to take more care in future......the red notice in the filler flap that says 'DIESEL' is a bit of a give away :D Quote
Guest daddycool Posted January 28, 2005 Report Posted January 28, 2005 in a hurry one day i put 72 litres of unleaded fuel in to my diesel transit. luckily i realised and phoned the RAC.He told me that they used to put unleaded in to diesel's years ago to clean them out as the petrol burns at a higher temperature. With modern diesels if you put in more than 1/4 of a tank you knacker them.I would definetly say that after i put in the unleaded it ran alot smoother and it was alot more responsive. mark :D Quote
Guest Paul Collins Posted January 29, 2005 Report Posted January 29, 2005 I managed to fill my boss's company car with petrol, a couple of days after the sale had been agreed. Then I drove it for 25 miles, got to our Oxford depot with everything running ok, but it wouldn't restart! Drained the tank, replaced the fuel filter and it started first time, the last week of using that car (PUG 306) was wonderful, the engine had a new lease of life. My advice would be to just keep topping it up. Of course, my sharan runs on LPG, pretty difficult to misfill that  Quote
