Guest gmrd Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Hi I hope someone can help me out here. Here's the problem. . . I noticed the glowplug light flashing. The car was still operating normally and I drove home across London with no problem. After checking the technical advice here realised I needed to check my brake lights. Sure enough, the centre hi level light was working but both bulbs in the brake lights needed replacing. So I decided to drive (with glow plug light flashing) to the local Halfords for a couple of bulbs. HOWEVER, about 500 yards down the road, the Gal's engine lost all power and I coasted to the side of the road. After several attempts to restart the engine, it finally fired into life, BUT after about 20 seconds died. AA man called out, he was baffled, but did replace my brake light bulbs for me :) and thought it might be the engine management system requiring a reset. I am new to my area (Bromley, Kent) and wasn't sure where I should get the Gal towed to (the local Ford dealer has moved miles away) so I got it back to my house. Does anyone have 1) any thoughts on what the fault might be 2) is this something I can try and fix or 2) a mobile mechanic in my area ? Thanks in advance Quote
johnb80 Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 It sounds very much like lack of fuel, i.e. the fuel pump not running. Check the fuses as a start. I don't think the two things are linked, more a coincidence. Not sure where it's located on the Gal but you couldn't have knock the fuel pump inertia switch during your investigations could you ? It's a switch that isolates the fuel pump when you have a crash, reset by pressing the button. This would be my best guess. The theory being, the idle failed when the fuel pressure dropped, you then continued on what was left in the filter and now its all gone! Hope this helps. Regards - John Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 Does it work OK now that the bulbs have been changed? If it does, I would stop worrying for a while ! Quote
Guest gmrd Posted January 22, 2005 Report Posted January 22, 2005 johnb80 you are a lifesaver !!! Fuse 13 (Fuel System Shutoff) was at fault. Swapped it over, Gal started and hasn't stopped since. Once again this site and the members has proven to be valuable. Thank you !!! Quote
