Hi,

In the middle of the dashboard, there's the beloved oval clock...

Can the panel that it sits on be easily prised out so I can get into the cavity and fill it with cement?

Thanks,

Taliska

Let me guess an annoying rhythmic noise from that area of the dash?

afraid to say it's a characteristic of analogue clocks, they go tick tock as standard <_<

IIRC it prises up from the front edge of the panel, if your not sure and dont want to risk damageing it try removeing the glove boxes, IIRC they are held in by three screws each

Yes, the panel it sits on just prises out.....and it doesn't go "tick tock" - once a minute, the minute hand moves to advance by one minute! An electronic miracle....

Thanks Guys,

{Seems I'm not always getting the email notifications - either that or I've been over-zealous with the spam killing. }

Will try to prise out the panel and squint inside.

As far as I remember, the top-of-the-dash storage bins have a big metal bar right at the back - I think that I need to get behind that.

The rattle wasn't too bad initially - only did it at 90mph, now it's doing it anywhere between 30-60mph.

I'm sure it started directly after the very first service some 15k miles ago. :(

Time to get the screwdrivers out...

Wish me luck!

Taliska.... I also have a rattle from under the dash somewhere... had it for a while but loath to take to dealers for dash removal as may then find other problems appear! Mine seems to come from near wiper linkages at front but wipers need to come off to get at this. Not too keen on pursueing this.

Will be interested in your success rate!

Completely forgot to do it today (and yesterday for that matter) - had a large bout of train track electification to do on OO scale over the weekend.

Guess it'll have to wait a while longer...

I had a similar problem - rattle at 70mph that seemed to be coming from the clock area. Popped clock out and packed electrical lead so it couldn't rattle, then added some tape around the clock mounting in case it was the clock itself - but no difference :D .

It wasn't till I took the Gal through a drive-thru car wash that the problem replicated itself without the speed, and the penny dropped - the rattle was coming from outside the bottom of the windscreen (and was triggered by air movement at speed or the powerful air dryer of the car wash :D ). Further investigation showed wiper blades to be firm, but the plastic decking into which they and the windscreen washers mount was decidedly loose. Tried to re-engage it in the mountings. Pretty sure I didn't manage to do it, but my fiddling got rid of the rattle anyway. :D . Reluctant to fiddle more in case I break the plastic - the mountings are a bit of a bugger to detach.

Our office Sharan 2.0 Petrol Auto Rice Pudding Skinner suffers from the same same fault. It has obviously got on someones nerves judging by the variety of bits chewing gum and silver paper wedged under the edge of it.

Well guys, it's a lot better now...

Lifted the analogue clock out, and - well nothing really - you can't see much in there and there wasn't much to rattle.

Plan B - looked at those panels just under the windscreen wipers...

They were wobbly, so decided to take the plunge and unbolted the wiper on the passenger side. Nut came off easily, then I lifted the arm up off the screen and it then came off quite easily. The panel lifted straight out. A brief inspection showed a cable-clip broken, one (out of three) plastic mounting studs missing and the panel mouldings bent where the studs join it. The two remaining studs were very wobbly. There was also some of that black tacky trim-fixing stuff too. Quite frankly it looks as if it had been screwed together badly in the first place.

Okay, so I got my tub of Plumbers Mait out which has been languishing in the garage for ages - it seemed to be the closest thing to this black tacky stuff that our friends in Portugal had used. I didn't want to super-glue it as I want to have the whole thing replaced later by Ford. I stuck it round the studs to stop them wobbling then put a little over the top of the stubs so that the panel might stick to the studs. I pushed the panel firmly down and re-attached the wiper, carefully aligning it with the other one.

Did the same operation at the driver's side, except no black tacky stuff was to be seen. All three studs were there this time, but they were all wobbly. Plumbers Mait to the rescue and all was tightened up. Now this side had started rattling directly after the first service - so perhaps not badly manufactured, but damaged later.

On the journey today - no rattle - bliss.

Now if yours rattles, get the car at a constant speed and a constant rattle, then flick the wipers - it might just change the rattle briefly. It does really sound as if it is coming from the inside of the car and the passenger side rattle sounds as if it's coming from the clock.

One giveaway indication is that the panel is badly scored where the wiper arm is rubbing away at it - oh, and of course, it's loose!

Many thanks, Gadgetoid...

Good luck, Another?Maybe!...

You know what to look for Andrew T...

Mr Ford, here cometh my Warranty Claim for two new panels, six new studs and one new cable clip. (It'll wait until the next service, 4000 miles).

Glad to be of service

Sounds like your repair was far more thorough than mine (more of an excuse to get out of the house for 30 mins on a grey Boxing Day afternoon).

Haven't I read in a thread on here recently that the windscreen washer panel was changed from a 3 piece to a one piece moulding last year. Let me know what sort of replacement you squeeze out of Frauds. (Of course if you have subtly repaired it they will tell you that there is nothing wrong and nothing needs replacing!)

I can confirm that the mystery rattle certainly does appear to come from some plastic bits under the wipers.

Today I had mine changed for new bits for the princely sum of

Sorted my rattle out as well... thanks SeatKid for the really useful photos re pollen filter. I suspected noise was coming from where the wiper mechanism is so removed the bulkhead cover thingy which gives access to the pollen filter. Length of curved grooved plastic fell out when I removed the cover, couldn't see where this fitted so left it out when replacing the cover. Result... no more rattle....wonderful! Don't know what the piece of plastic is though but I reckon it must have been left loose after service done b4 I collected the car so can't have been doing much then....it's not doing anything now as is in my garage!! (Except not driving me mad with it's noise)

I had a windscreen replaced and the replacer man said i'll put a couple of blobs of sealant behind this panel when I put the thing back together, he said that their prone to rattling at speed. At the time I thought nothing of it but there you go tips from the trades that know.

Hi Guys,

Ford seem to want to replace it with the exact same 'scuttle panels' that were there already - wot a surprise.

Gadgetoid:

Haven't I read in a thread on here recently that the windscreen washer panel was changed from a 3 piece to a one piece moulding last year.

then:

You should try VAG-COM - it comes up as code 00-000 on 14202(washer panel module)

Do you know if this single moulding is suitable for an 53 plate Galaxy?

Alas, I've not VAG-COM to look at the info. :o

Thanks,

Sorry Taliska, but the line about VAG-COM was just me trying to tease GSMGuy - though he failed to bite <_<

I am not clear about the date of changeover to the one piece moulding, but I am sure someone on here was reporting they were trying to replace theirs and couldn't get hold of the proper part (central spares not including the washer jet pieces or something similar) - try doing a search. Or asking the parts chappie at your local Frauds (unfortunately my local chap is useless and the good parts chap from VW is too far away to call on casualy)
