Lower Brake Lights

My 2.3 2000 zetec has a problem with the lower brake lights, the high mounted one works ok, the other two seem to work only now and again, does anyone have an idea where I should start looking for the problem? Thanks in advance.

Try the simple first, Remove the bulbs and check the contacts for corrosion and wear, scrape the lead blobs on the base of the bulbs with a knife or key as these sometime oxidise leading to intermittent operation.

possible faulty switch not un-heard of on gals etc, the upper brake lights are led's so draw less power and come on quicker, as i said possible switch fault . the switch is dismantable (is that a word) clean the contacts and refit but is only a temp repair
