Do you have CC or standard heating?

does the aux heater cut in?

does the temp gauge on the dash move in time with these temperature changes? can you smell anything unusual from the air vents? are you loosing coolant?

does the engine come up to temp and stay there?

does the rear heater get hot and stay hot while this happens?

do the hoses to the front heater unit get hot? and do they stay hot?

I think that should do for starters? :)

to answer your questions

1.Galaxy 1.9tdi (2001)

3.Engine up to temp (90) around town ok but on long trip overheats quickly than back to 90!! and yes odd smell from vents

Will check your other sugestions tomorrow Many thanks Graham

Overheats quickly...no heater....ummmm....What I would do is...

1. Get the system pressure tested to check for leaks (which is where the funny smell maybe coming from [heater matrix])

2. Change thermostat - check old one was opening (if not leads to overheating and possible no heater)

3. Change water pump - does anyone know if this model is one of those fitted with plastic impeller? [prone to break off shaft])

If that dont fix it, I dont know what will..

Garage has already performed a Pressure test and a chemical test both appear to have past. Alson I have noticed no heat from front or rear blowers (fans ok) plus bottom radiator pipe is cold!! any idears

Thanks for all your replys

They all sound like possible reasons why its overheating. The garage has suggested, first they change the thermostat, if this doesn't cure it then the water pump.Perhaps I should suggest to them a possible air lock!!. Iwouldn't be surprised if they carry on changing parts just to get more cash out of me!

Will report their findings.

For any one else out there. The problem appears NOT to be stat, water pump but a possible air lock!!! Should have listend to you guys and checked it myself!! Garage charged me

Well, you (I) learn something every day :)

I feel under some obligation to point out that if a garage drained your system (causing the air lock in the first place) it was their responsibility to fill it and bleed it properly.

Problem back again!!!!! No heating Over heats almost straight away. I thought the garage had sorted it, I can't think want else it could be but an air lock again, But how is air get in. Your thoughts would be very much appreciated.

Any sign of a leak? Are you having to top the cooling system up? - is the expansion tank cap correctly fitted and has it been checked to make sure it only opens under the correct pressure?

Hi Ivor

No sign of a leak, and yes I do have to top up the water level! How can I check the expansion tank cap!! back to garage! Also I have noticed when I check the level the expansion bottle is almost full but if I release the pressure by removing the cap the water level drops!!

When they pressure test the coolant system the expansion bottle cap is removed so as far as I know it's not part of the test! check out the rubber seal around the cap, if it shows signs of wear or folds around the seal then replace it

That is so indicative of an airlock. The build-up of pressure in the airlock forces the coolant into the bottle, release the pressure and the water goes back into the block.

The fill & bleed proceedure is to fill the bottle to the max mark and with the cap off run up to normal operating temperature and then for a further five minutes. Personally I would run it until the cooling fan came on as long as it was not boiling up. Allow the engine to go cold then top up the bottle and replace the cap.

I have a slow coolant leak on my 2.3 petrol. I have had the leak for about six months and it is in the thermostat housing. I have a new one but havent got round to replacing it yet. My heater goes cold as the level drops below minimum but only when idling. Topping up cures the problem and I have never needed to bleed the system. From your symptoms I suspect there may be a small head gasket breach forcing gas into the coolant and causing an overpressure which may be blowing off the coolant and leaving a vapour lock. I hope you problem is not this drastic but it sounds suspicious. The coolant smell could be from when the filler is venting at overpressure and infiltrating into the air inlet; they are very close to each other.
