Taliska Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Hi all, I know that this has been covered a few times, but I have a TDI and the dealer filled its oil up at the last service. I checked the level (can't remember whether it was hot or cold) and thought that the level was too high - i.e. at the upper kink. Knowing that the oil level drops if the engine is warm - when are you supposed to measure it - when the engine is hot or cold. I presume that the sensible answer is 'when cold', cos that's when the oil is normally put in the car when it is built and when it is serviced. So at what level(s) should I start to be concerned about it? Many thanks, Taliska P.S. Didn't they say years ago that if you were to change the oil, that you should run the engine first to get the oil warm and runny? Quote
GSMGuy Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Oil level actually increases when the engine is warm for a couple of reasons... Heat causes the oil to expand, and any oil that was clinging to the side of block/sump etc will more readily return to the sump when it is warm and thinner.. TBH the difference is negligble, so as long as the level is between min & max, I wouln't worry.. HTH Mike Quote
seatkid Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 So at what level(s) should I start to be concerned about it? (Pardon my language) RTFM...<_< "If the level shall lie in the region between B and C, it will be....." Yeah, I see what you mean.... <_< Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 (Pardon my language) RTFM...:D RTFM <_< that's similar to FT :D that's the setting on the torque wrench at Kwik Fit when they do your wheel nuts up! as in THOSE NUTS ARE F'ING TIGHT! <_< Quote
italiastar Posted January 10, 2005 Report Posted January 10, 2005 Mine was about 5mm above max - the dealer said it was to account for usage? I had the same with Mitsubishi, hoever in their case the oil was slightly dirty - in my view they didn't suck out all of the old oil and toped it up with a standard amount, but then again I would say that. When ever I change oil in a car I firstly run the engine until it's hot and then leave it draining for at least 30 mins. When I re-fill it, I fill it to max, run the engine to fill up the oil filter and then re-fill it to max and re-check it after a day or so. How can we expect technicians to do that? Quote
