Bought a 2001 TDI Galaxy Zetec in the winter and all of a sudden its hot and kids moaning,no problem I thought just turn on the aircon but all it seems to do is blow warm air. AC light comes on OK but doesn't make any difference.I assume this must be faulty, does anybody have any advice on what I can check or do to test it other than send it to a garage to get robbed for a compressor like all the other comments I have seen on this subject ?

You should still be covered by the 3-year warranty. As cars become ever-more electronics laden, it seems to be best to let the dealers attempt to investigate anything that could be covered by warranty. If they won't, try a specialist. The gas should not all have leaked out in less than 3 years. My "other" car, the wife's now since I got the Galaxy, is a Renault Scenic with aircon; it's nearly 5 years old and the aircon seems to work better than when it was new!

I know that a guy where I used to work got his aircon topped up by a mobile aircon specialist who told him that some systems were better than others. He said that Jaguar, in particular, had very bad systems that lost plenty of gas.

May be worth speaking to a specialist, as they may know how good or bad the Galaxy system is.

I know that the pre-facelifted Galaxy/Sharan/Alhambra has a reputation for aircon problems, but I thought that this was fixed with the 2000 face-lift which is much more than a face-lift - not quite an all-new vehicle, but extensive modifications and alterations were made to the vehicle and its systems.

Thanks for the advice, seems like aircon is a common problem on the Galaxy and suspect a lot more will be finding the problem after these last few hot days.

I can't hear anything kick in under the bonnet when I turn the AC on but then the engines quite noisy.

Guess its off to the garage or specialist. Will keep you updated with outcome.
