Guest big dru Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 happy new year. last week when starting my galaxy from cold there was a rattling noice from the top end witch disapered after a few seconds at first like the hydrolics were dry. afew days later the rattle became constant and sounded like a tractor. any ideas would be apr.thanks. big dru : Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 Are you sure it's the top end that rattling? it could be the timeing chains! which could mean sudden death to the engine or at the least a major rebuild job if they slip or drop off the sprockets! if it is the top end then you could have a sticky tappet or one has failed! the early VR6's have a problem with weak valve stems! these can snap and cause a bit of damage when it happens! mind you the engine usually stops dead when that happens :D another cause of the dreaded top end rattle is a loose plug cap! I had one loose and I was ready to lift the top end off and get ready for a rebuild job :D in the proccess of starting to remove parts I found the loose plug cap :o reseated it and the rattle disapeared :D so before you start thinking the worse check out the simple options first! Guest big dru Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 definatly top end that is rattling, was looking at plugs they are fine started engine ,ran for split second, rattle rattle jingle,STOP.sounds like snaped chain ,are these engines high impact ,bent valves and whatnot ,how big a job is this Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 If the chains have slipped/broke! if it will run then it will run like a donkey with three legs and sound like a TDI :D it's a head replacement at the least or at the worse new pistons/engine :D if the valves have met with the pistons to replace the chains/tensioners it's a gearbox out job, but if the valves and pistons have met then it may be easier to pull the block out and stick a recon unit in, depending on the damage? if it's just the head then I have a link to a place that does recon heads complete with valves or short blocks if you need it? without stripping it down there's no way of telling of the damage done! the bottom end is usually bullet proof the weakest part of the VR6 is the timing chain and tensioners :o how many miles has the engine done? Guest big dru Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 the engine has coverd just over 107600, wont start at all now makes a noise like my mk1 gtis used to when t/belts snaped,as for sounding like an oil burner when running you were spot on ,average performance when driving it home with head turning rattle . seatkid Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 :D ooo...errr....oh dear....:o don't try turning it over again until you get to look at the chains, there may still be hope... vr6 galaxy - Can't they be inspected from the top end? e.g. remove cam covers. from previous posts it appears that VR6 chain tensioners go suddenly leading to slap and rattle followed by detatchment from sprocket..... what is about VAG's inability to design a tensioner that lasts?? (cambelt versions as well) :D Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 1, 2005 Report Posted January 1, 2005 The cam cover can be removed to take a look at the top end, the plug lead guides and the intake manifold has to come off, as well as a few other parts, with the manifold off the cam cover can be lifted and you can see the top of the head and the cams and the cams drive chain to remove the head a lot more has to come the engine but to replace the chains and the tensioners the gearbox has to come out :D Quote
Guest big dru Posted January 2, 2005 Report Posted January 2, 2005 thanks for the info , will do when the snow melts outside to cold for curbside motors.need help with timming marks for rebuild? Quote
Glen Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 The last two editions of Car Mechanics magazine have just covered a Galaxy VR6 engine rebuild due to a snapped timing chain. It may be worth having a read for a bit of insight before you start dismantling. Good luck!! Glen Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted January 3, 2005 Report Posted January 3, 2005 Takes a while to load but it shows all you need to know! Quote
