I need a new ECU for my '97 2ltr DOHC Galaxy. Old one is one of the ones that helps provide hesitation part No 95 VW HC (ref service bulletin 83/1997) Can anyone recommend a good supplier with a fair price or breakers you can trust. Also does anyone know if the new ECU will need to be calibrated to the car once fitted.

Thanks

If it's covered by a service bulletin, have you asked a dealer if an upgrade is available for free or reduced price? Quite often, if a technical service bulletin requires new parts to be fitted, it is done for free even if vehicle is outside of the original warranty period.

..oh, and welcome to the site, by the way.

Thanks Ivor. Yes spoke to my local dealership today and credit to them they kept up to thier reputation of been DI**HEADS. There is no chance they'll change it FOC or reduced and they would want to stick the motor on thier computer and run tests first (

Just a thought but how about getting it chipped :o the new software may overwrite the glitches?

I'd be tempted to contact Ford customer relations TBH. If there is a known issue with early ECU's, and the car is in a remote location, then Ford should pay for the upgrade as it has been missed in the car's earlier life when (hopefully) it did visit dealer workshops.

Is yours the ecu that needs replaceing or just reprogramming? as the service bulletin list two options for a fix depending on the ecu part number if you know the whole part number it may help narrowing down the fix and possibly the cost!

nice idea vr6, would like to get the motor running properly first might look in to it later.

Thanks

Thanks guys, just to let you know what ford hq said "you'll have to pay what ever the dealer charges"

Thats not a surprise, so I spoke to an Ecu specialist and was told that mine is not reprogramable so either have it rebuilt with new chips or buy a new one. The guys OK, he suggested another option is try and get one off a later modle with the same engine from a breakers yard, then if my problem goes great, if problem goes and I get a new fault get it flashed, this should still be cheaper than a new unit and if orignal problem still there look at sensors etc again.

I'll look at your link Topbloke, Thanks.

So off to find a late model 2ltr dohc Galaxy not wanting a brain.
