Common problem, as you have already found, is wires breaking between body and tailgate. Suggest you go back and have another look and feel each wire in turn until you find the power feed to the boot lock solenoid.

Mine is also a '97. I got fed up chasing this wire then that wire - I cut out 4-6" on EACH wire and inserted (with crimp connectors) 6-8" of high grade multi-strand wire. So far, 8 months, so good.

Good idea

Is there any slack on this cable that I don't know about (don't want to make things worse yet)?

How easy is it to get the interior cover off the boot so I can check I haven't pulled things too far?

I think its the Red/Grey wire that powers the locking motor, are you sure that in your attempt to open the hatch using the key you havent switched the lock to manual operation only? check in your user hand book it shows you how to isolate the rear hatch from the C/Locking

Will check manual just in case, as I'm pretty certain that all the the wires were intact after I'd bodged up all the split wires with the insulating tape.

I don't want to muck around with the wires again as the car goes in for its MOT retest on Thursday and knowing my luck I'll b*gger it up...
