Guest blatters Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Here's the story. Taxi whizzes past and whacks my mirror. Doesn't stop (so as per usual then). Get home and try to readjust the casing because it looks a bit wonky. Bad move. Unit comes off in my hand. Dangles by the cables. I notice that the trouble is with the white metal pivot. The mirror housing is fine. But the black bit that comes out of the driver's door and fixes to the mirror at its bottom bit has busted. Now my 'pride & joy' is sporting some very fetching red insulation tape around the mirror to hold it on pending a repair. My wife has spoken to the dealer and the part's on order. Can the black bit be replaced on its own? Does the coloured mirror housing have to be chucked out even if it's ok? Most importantly, is it going to be expensive? Any views on this? Blatters. PS. Because I park out on the road, I fold the mirror in most nights. Do you reckon that is weakening the pivot bit? Anyone else had any experience of this? Quote
Richmond Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Guess what? The whole thing, including the black bit, the housing and the glass (IIRC) has to be bought. Costs Quote
toneinblack Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 can you do anything with superglue to this black bit of plastic? also have a look on ebay :P Quote
Guest blatters Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Toneinblack, You know what, I'm feeling a bit 'donkey' like right now. That's because I think the superglue wouldn't have worked (that white metal stuff never sticks) but Araldite type stuff would have been worth a punt (now I know a bill of Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted December 8, 2004 Report Posted December 8, 2004 Folding the mirror should not weaken it at all. If the painted cover on your original mirror is undamages, it can be carefully prised off and re-fitted to the replacement, saving the need to pay for that one to be painted. If you can't work out how to prise it off, you are welcome to try reversing down my driveway and clipping one of the car port supports! You have to get it just right, then the cover simply pops off :P Quote
Guest blatters Posted December 9, 2004 Report Posted December 9, 2004 Ivor, No need as I've done a deal with the taxi firms who have agreed to drive towards me at high speed, precision clipping function on! Providing I'm still in one piece I'll let you know what their accuracy rate is! Blatters :P Quote
Guest blatters Posted December 15, 2004 Report Posted December 15, 2004 OK, duly relieved of my hard earned cash: **** Quote
ak47mh Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Hi everyone, I did a search and came across this thread and guess what, I have this exact same problem. I have spoken to Ford and ordered the part and plan on reconnecting my Pacific green wing mirror cover myself. My question though is how easy is it to replace the wing mirror that attaches to the door? Do I need to take the inside door cover off to get at it? I understand it is just two bolts and the wiring should just be a case of unclipping it. Thanks in advance,Ant Quote

Smilge Posted May 16, 2007 Report Posted May 16, 2007 Did my passenger side a few weeks back after i reversed into the gate. Rapid araldite is still holding the whole thing together although it no longer folds backwards. Once it was glued I helt it by wrapping a belt around it. Sorted and didnt cost me Quote

Does anyone know how to remove the door cover to get the electric cables unplugged as I have to replace the complete unit? Quote
alan_131 Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 There is an entry in the FAQ (look under door card). Not done an electric mirror on Galaxy but the manual ones can be done without removing the door card, though it's a bit of a fiddle. Be surprised if electric not the same.... Quote
Scorpiorefugee Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 (edited) Beware - there are at least 2 different plug/socket connectors for the mirror so you may have to do a bit of work with a crimping tool and getting the door panel off isn't easy without the right tool. My experience after having 2 door glasses replaced (Low lifes nicking things) and 2 door mirrors there were no fixings left in tact. Apart from that it's a doddle. Mine cost £45 from Ebay but that was a few years ago. Edited August 26, 2012 by Scorpiorefugee Quote
gregers Posted August 26, 2012 Report Posted August 26, 2012 pv collins are you anywhere near me???as i have 2 complete units sitting in my garage. Quote
alan_131 Posted August 27, 2012 Report Posted August 27, 2012 Been a good while since I did mine, but I think I tied a string to the end of the cable on the inside of the car, then pulled the old unit off. Of course, electric may plug into the loom somewhere deep inside the door - manual is the same for both doors and just comes out at the knob.... Quote
MartinWindsurf Posted December 31, 2014 Report Posted December 31, 2014 Similar story but finishing with some wiring info: dropped a canoe on my drivers door mirror last year and it was neatly sliced off at the piviot. Feeling rather clever I drilled a couple of holes and managed a freebie repair using just 2 wood screws, but like a couple above, the mirror no longer flexes/pivots. Well, not until I met that same taxi that some of you have met...... this time it all fell to pieces with a coming together of moving mirrors. Fortunately Eurocarparts were having their Xmas sale and I got a replacement for Quote
