How old is the car? There are known issues with facelifted model instrument displays, that are covered by warranty, assuming that VW have now got a fix for the problems - search the forum for more info.

I wouldnt worry too much about it,my Sharan does exactly the same but only when the outside temp is below 4oC,but when its above it works normally.I have checked my water etc and everything appears to be as it should be.It has been mentioned in a previous post that if the gauge moves about as dramaticaly as mine does that it is not possible for the water and indeed the coolant temperature to alter that quickly.but get it checked all the same....mine is due a service in the New Year....so it will be mentioned...along with the aux heater, the air con turning itself on......the trip computer going mad,,,,,,,,,,,,etc....

Had similar problem with my 2001 1.9 tdi. turned out the engine coolant sensor was U/S.

But their are apparently 3 different types fitted to late Tdi engines.

local VW dealer was very helpfull in sorting out which one it was. Go armed with your engine number and most times they can check on their computer database which type of sensor your engine has fitted.

Sensor located under the the thermostat housing, a fiddly job but not to bad.
