wilber Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 does anyone know whether the front passenger air bag can be turned off? i have a gal 2.8 ghia first registered oct 2002 (two years old). We would like to carry our new born baby in this seat, however this is not recomended when a car has an active passenger air bar.thanks Quote
Guest fredt Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 It can and it cant ! most dealers wont disable it as it would leave them open to all sorts of compo claims in an accident! yet VW do a kit to disable the passenger air bag! although finding a dealer willing or knowing they could do it would a be a hard job Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Is it not something that can be done through diagnostics? ie VAG-COM?? Mike Quote
Guest fredt Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 Not sure on that as IIRC the kit contains a plug in resistor unit and a set of sticker warning of the air bag deactivation I could look up the part number but since the installation of XP SP2 half my software no longer runs :( could be time to uninstall it Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 ... but since the installation of XP SP2 half my software no longer runs ... I've not yet plucked up the courage to install SP2 because of the problems I hear that people are having with getting software to work. Does TIS CD still run under XP SP2? Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 28, 2004 Report Posted November 28, 2004 I've installed SP2 on all 3 of my machines, the brothers' lapy and PC and the Mothers' PC - had a couple of probs, but nowt serious.... TIS CD can refuse to install, but it is a well documented prob and is a result of the fact that the program is 16 bit, and as such - quite old and incompatible with SP2 - However it's easy to sort and once you make the changes any other prog that would normally be a prob will run fine too... We had probs with our CAD Kitchen design software -- but all sorted now. Mike Quote

Mike Well I just removed XP SP2 and ended up doing a reinstall of XP :P all my copies of the TIS now load with out any error messages popping up :D yet my EKTA disk wont load as I am missing an INI file :( the search for the missing INI file will have to wait till I get the urge or have nothing better to do one night :P Quote

I should re-phrase that Ivor any software installed before SP2 works ok it's just a few things that wont install after, the TIS and any other 16 BIT program I have tried installing since SP2 bring up an error message and wont load :P since binning SP2 they all load with out errors :( Masked MarauderThey are in the same union, one out, all out......... not true one of them can be removed if the correct rated resistor is plugged in and the system then reset by the use of the diagnostic machine, as I say once I get ETKA back up and running I'l dig out the part numbers Quote

MrT Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 What about the effect of the air-bag built into the seat and the side curtains on a baby in a rearward facing carrier? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 What about the effect of the air-bag built into the seat and the side curtains on a baby in a rearward facing carrier? Shouldn't be a problem as they should be well clear of a baby seat when deploying. Baby may get a fright though - but just as much as it would otherwise do when involved in an accident. Best to avoid accidents (and babies?). :( Quote
ridway Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Regarding SP2. i'm not a happy chappy. I have a small network which refuses to work with SP2 whatever I try. XP's restore has come in very useful the last few days The Gals running fine however, have a good Christmas everyone. Rich Quote
wilber Posted December 1, 2004 Author Report Posted December 1, 2004 thanks everyone. the baby will have to go in the back. apparently some cars have a switch that turns just the passenger air bag off .I believe the peugot 106 or 206 has this facility. With soon to have three kids, and only a lap belt in the middle seat the eldest will have to start sitting in the third row. Anyone heard of a child car seat that works on a lap belt or has anyone managed to convert from a lap belt to a diagnal belt? This would enable all three kids to be in second row thus allowing for prams etc to go in back. Quote
faded-fish Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Anyone heard of a child car seat that works on a lap belt Britax (http://www.britax.co.uk/index.htm) have a fit finder which tells you which of their seats will fit in which cars and in which position. The models it states can be used with the lap belt are Eclipse, Elite, Freeway, & Renaissance. At the moment, Halfords are advertising the Freeway for Quote
tim-spam Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 Only a lap belt in the middle seat? My 2002 Alhambra has a 3-point belt which comes down fron the roof with 2 buckles, one for each side of the seat. All of the Sharans and Alhambras I test drove before buying were the same. If this belt can be retrofitted, this would be the best solution. Tim Quote
Andrew T Posted February 15, 2005 Report Posted February 15, 2005 The 3 point belt appeared with the postMK2 facelift in late 2001. Our early MK2 only has a lap belt on the centre seat. We have used a Britax freeway with the lap belt and it fits very well, provided you use your knee to push the child seat and compress the middle seat a bit while you pull the lap belt tight. I don't think retro-fitting a three point belt would be possible because it would require a new roof lining and the mounting point wouldn't be present above the window. There were rumours on this site of a seat belt maufacturer developing a retro fitting 3-point belt kit. I suspect such a kit would entail bolting a reel through the floor behind the middle seat and then running the belt up over the seat back (as is done in some minibus seat -belt conversions). Quote
