Bigjeeze Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 I am considering replacing the cam belt on my 1997 TDI - I have the Haynes manual and also the TIS but don't have the tools to lock the camshaft etc - Does anyone know where these can be bought at a resonable price or hired - I live in Bournemouth. Guest T120 Posted November 25, 2004 Report Posted November 25, 2004 Russell Need to do mine nice one, many thanks :D Its not to bad if your mechanicly minded, had mine down to actualy getting the belt off but because of the difficulty in making the spacer for locking the cam up bottled out, reason space; if motor had been out then no problem and job would have been done. Only special tools required are 1 x 16mm & 1 x 13mm ratchet ring spanners for getting the 7 nuts & bolts off when removing the engine mount. :D Also if car supported on axial stands and the weight of the engine supported on the jack as per Haynes access to the last 3 inaccesable bolts is dead easy with the above spanners, Halfrauds do good ones with life time quarentee about Quote

Guest T120 Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 Thanks MMOnly one thing there is an inspection hole somewhere which shows the TDC marks on the flywheel? tried looking on mine but cannot find it anywhere or was it omitted on march 1999 onwards models. Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 27, 2004 Report Posted November 27, 2004 No need for marks, that's what the alignment pins are for - MM, does that kit do the PD as well, with it not having a fuel pump per se? Mike Quote

Mike There is an inspection port, yes. It is at the gearbox end, on the upper side of the transmission housing. There is a marker on the flywheel that must line up with the marker on the housing. There is no crankshaft locking pin with this engine. No, the PD kit is different. It will set you back about Quote
