HalfPint Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 I have a '96 2.0 galaxy. And some time ago i had the front pads replaced by a mechanic as i could not get the pistons back.I short while later the abs and the brake warning lights come on when you go above 20mph but are not on when you start up the car.I had a fault check done and have been told that it is either the abs unit or the other part of the abs, and they are about Quote
Guest fredt Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 The ABS only operates above IIRC 15 MPH, so untill you hit the magic figure the ABS diagnostics are reading that all is ok, it could be something as simple as a duff wheel sensor, or the guy unplugged or disturbed the wires while he was there? elsewhere on the forum are the details on how to check the sensors, IIRC it was Topman or Johnb80? that posted the test readings try a search under their names and ABS sensors mine does it at least once a month and I know I have a dodgy sensor but cant be asked to change it  I usually pull over, stop and restart the car and the light goes out :o when it dies completly then I'l change it :D if the mechanic is any good he should be able to pin point where the fault lies by the fault code logged Quote
Guest Paul Collins Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 My ABS light comes one every month or so, I just reach into the O/S front wheelarce, unplug the sensor, plug it in again, then wait for the light to come on the next time Quote

johnb80 Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 It's most likely a faulty wheel sensor or wiring, usually disconnecting and reconnecting will be enough to fix it. The reason for opening the bleed nipple is to stop fluid being forced back through the abs unit, in some cars seals in the master cylinder can be flipped inverted by this, dunno if thats true of the Gal. Nothing to do with dirt etc which shouldn't be there in the firstplace. Regards - JB Quote

Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Maybe Fredt has been to bodybuilder classes and has too many muscles now? Quote
HalfPint Posted November 22, 2004 Author Report Posted November 22, 2004 my abs comes on all the time every time every day.I've had all the sensors checked and there box of tricks say it's either the pump has seized or it's the manifold unit that all the pipes go into.If this is the case what size hammer would i need to fix it. :D :D Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 When did you last have the brake fluid changed? Quote
HalfPint Posted November 24, 2004 Author Report Posted November 24, 2004 To be honest have not changed the fluid since i got the gal,but it is being done this week and see if that clears the problem. Also if it works and the abs light stay's off would i have to get the diagnostic cleared. thanks.............. Masked Marauder Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 The speed sensor in the gearbox says 20mph and the unit checks the ABS sensors on the wheels. And if one is not working...... The light comes on! EDIT: I see you have had them tested. It must be something else then, but the sensors are the first thing you should check. Quote
