Guest sparkie pete Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 I have just aquired a 2000 face lift Seat Alhambra 1.9 tdi 115 with 32000 on the clock. i think that the cambelt is due for changing shortly as it is 4 years old, however my local seat dealer says that it would be a waste of money as the change can wait until it reaches 60000 miles, could anybody please clarify. Is the cambelt change part of the 4 yearly service schedule. Thanks all Pete Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Ah this old chestnut again.....VW and Ford both specify 40,000 miles as the change interval, but apparently Ford started off with 60,000 mile intervals when the facelifted Gaalxy was launched, reducing the interval within weeks of the launch of the facelifted models. We've had postings from others with VW group cars using the same engine where the interval is somewhat greater. Not sure what SEAT specify. ...and to the best of my knowledge, the cambelt change is never done as part of routine servicing (irrespective of vehicle manufacturer), you are always left to ask for it to be done specially (meaning the service bill is inflated accordingly). Incidentally, got to see my parents' new car yesterday and to read the handbook - 2005MY Volvo V70 D5; cambelt change interval given as 108,000 miles or 6 years, whichever comes first! Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 IMHO - I think that if the engine is what is known as an "interference" motor - ie, if the belt snaps, then the pistons hit the valves and cause major damage - the manufacturers are erring on the side of caution.... Personally, I would be inclined to stick to the 40k limit on a belt.. Last time I ignored the warnings, the belt on my Escort van snapped... @ 38000 miles since the last change, I know because I changed it the last time! Annoyingly, I had the new belt ehind the drivers' seat for the last 6 months/10k miles... And yep, the Escort D is an interference motor! But @ Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 21, 2004 Report Posted November 21, 2004 Not sure what SEAT specify. 60K miles or 6 years. Quote
HalfPint Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 This is going to sound weird but trust me for a minute. Some years ago i went to scotland we my 2.0 '96 galaxy.Whilst there i keep getting a screeching noise for the belt, being a long way from home and the bum was starting to pout,I went to a ford garage and told them,a mechanic came out with a bottle and puffed come white powder on the belt whilst the engine was running (was it coke i hear you say)The noise stopped straight away and never came back. The magic powder was..................talc no special talc unless you want a nice smell from the engine.Just puff it and listen to the noise go away!(I HOPE)NEWBIE Quote

Saturbo Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Talc is a wonderful lubricant for toothed and multi ribbed belts. I've been using Johnson's talc (had a few huge bottles left over from when sprogs were still in nappies) for about 4 years on my Aspen alternator belt. used on all sorts of things over the years - washing machines respond especially well, but don't over do it  it could get messy. jkspoff Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 After speaking direct to Ford UK they told me that it is 4 years or 40,000 miles and that the owners handbook was incorrect where it says 4 years or 60,000 miles. The same apparently goes for all the Tdi VW 1.9 engines fitted to Sharon/Galaxy after 2000. Quote
Guest sparkie pete Posted November 23, 2004 Report Posted November 23, 2004 Thanks for all the advise, i think that i will get the belt changed, best be on the safe side than lumbered with a large engine repair bill. Quote
funbus Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 There seems to be some general confusion as to what the service schedule says about cambelt changes, if indeed anything. Is there a copy of the ford service schedule somewhere please, and what each service should include? For a tdi 99v reg? I'm looking for a written Ford recommendation about when cambelts are to be changed by main dealers as part of a service. (I know for honda's this info is included as part of the service schedule so I am thinking Fords schedule should/may have this too?) I called a large dealer chain a while ago and they advised 60k cambelt change as part of a service for tdi 99v but couldnt confirm if it was part of the schedule (the ford girly on fone didnt really know what she was doing). Any written documentation with this on a schedule please? Cheers for any help. Quote
funbus Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 Aha, I have found it myself: http://www.etis.ford.com/fordservice/serviceScheduleView.do Quote
jkspoff Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 Ford, VW and SEAT mechanic service books states 40k change for 115 tdi which was revised in 2001. Quote
