Guest Wanny Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Typical Galaxy Heating ...... All year I have read with intrest about the Gals Cimate Control/Air Con, have had no problems with AC. Now winters set in and I need the heating only to find there is none ! Blowers working Ok but only cool air coming out, rad has water in it which gets hot .. Any ideas before I start looking ?? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 20, 2004 Report Posted November 20, 2004 Jammed heater valve or airlock in system. Have you taken it for a long run to get water/coolant nice and hot, then felt the heater pipes (or squeezed them to see if they contain air)? Quote
Buncers Posted November 22, 2004 Report Posted November 22, 2004 Strangely enough I have exactly the same problem. No heating. Is heating only produced from the heater?Does the aircon not produce any heat just cooling. My heater guage takes ages to move, does this mean my thermostat is stuck or broken? Quote

Air conditioning uses a compressor to pump heat out of the cabin. Climate Control uses the same compressor but is 'intelligent'??? and will use either the compressor to cool and de-humidify or the hot water from the engine to heat the cabin. It will use BOTH heating and cooling when it needs to de-humidify the cabin. The slow warm up could be - The aux heater not working, the thermostat stuck open, the cooling fans on all of thge time, the engine not running  Regards - John Quote
jkspoff Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 The diesel Galaxy has a very efficient engine, so efficient infact that it doesn't produce enough excess heat for heating the cabin, hence the aux heater. It can take up to 15 minutes on a very cold day before hot air is blown out, this is apparently normal on diesel Galaxys, I suppose money is being saved on fuel consumption  Quote

Buncers Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 Thanks guys - So I guess I need to check out the thermostat and the aux heater. Any suggestions how I can check whether these are working or not ? Quote
Guest fredt Posted November 24, 2004 Report Posted November 24, 2004 To check the operation of the stat you need to take it out, so you may as well just replace it while your there, the aux heater, well you could start the engine one freezing cold morning and see if it blows out any smoke? if it does its working! if it doesnt then it's not working! see other posts on that topic! one other check is to try the rear heaterunit, if that blows hot and the front heater doesnt then the problem lies in the front heater unit! either the heater control knob's cable has slipped/snapped/come off ? or the pipes/matrix are blocked? or the matrix has gone? are you loosing any coolant, do you get a funny smell when the heater is on ? There is an easier way to test the stat, run the engine until the needle is up one notch on the gauge and feel the radiator, if it is warm then the stat is stuck open. On a pre-2000.75 TDi Galaxy the thermostat is behind the power-steering pump and a pain to get out. So if you do change the stat then change your coolant too, may as well kill two birds with one stone. As for the booster heater you can check the operation of that by simply looking at it on an icy day, five minutes after you start the engine. If it is working you will see a heat haze coming off it! It is located behind the rear passenger side wheel and can be seen by looking under from the back of the car. Quote
