Take the cover off the top of the engine, and look at the brake servo. In the area between it and the engine there is a pipe with a retaining screw on the top and bottom and a ring on the end nearest the engine. Remove the screws and undo the ring. Now rotate the thermostat anti-clockwise to remove it. Retfit in reverse order but use a new O ring. Quote

I have recently had problems with the aux heater (or booster heater) on my TDi. There is another thread on this matter. But when the weather started to get colder a few weeks ago I realised it had packed up altogether. I noticed how (a) the temp gauge took alot longer to creep its way up to normal 90c and then when I was descending down a long hill it (B) started falling off from 90c down towards the cooler end. That was what made me suspect the aux heater. When the heat from the engine itself is insufficient the aux heater should have cut in (well that's my reasoning anyway). The thing has been fixed. To begin with the dealer managed to get the aux heater working again although they said they would have to take it back for some further modification when the parts came in.But the important bit here is that, as soon as they got the aux heater working again, the car went back to its old self - warming up quicker to 90c and not fluctuating after that.So I hope it is as simple as the stat. If not then check to see that you are getting a jet engine sound from under the nearside rear passenger door if the outside temp is below 8c (thereabouts). Sometimes it will take a shortish drive to get the aux heater to kick in but 5mins should do it.All the best.....Blatters :lol: Quote
