I just recently had one of the twin coil packs on my galaxy pack up, thus causing he vehicle to run on only 2 cylinders,it didn't run for far approx 1/4 mile if that(couldn't drive it any futher if i wanted to!!).Got the car to Fords who replaced both coil packs,it ran fine for a whole day, than we stated noticing that whenever you came to a junction or were slowing down ,the engine would just die and cut out on you.It would always restart first time ,but the next time you slowed down it would cut out again,it's not fussy it will cut out on you at junctions, traffic lights, zebra crossings, going round roundabouts , as well as cutting out , it has stated smoking very badly, it's not burning oil, but it seems to be burning fuel ? i think??

Any help as to what could be the problem would be most apprechiated.

I've had various suggestions inc fuel idle valve, vacuum pipe, head gasket failure.

The car is due to go into Fords again shortly,I would like to have n idea of whats wrong before hand ,so i can work out how much this is going to cost me to fix.

Problem with over fuelling due to sensor (or maybe CAT) damage caused by being driven on 2 cylinders ?

see also topic about cracked isolation of LT leads to coil packs. because it is taped you cannot see it directly. remove tape and check isolation carefully. Because of the heat of the engine the isolation becomes hard and cracks due to vibration. It is a commen problem of the 2.3 engine.

my ford garage could not detect it with there diagnostics equipment, I found it by myselves. I my case I replaced the full wire loom.

If it is just cutting out when you lift your foot off the throttle try cleaning the Idle control valve, situated on top of the throttle body. I had the same type of problem (not quite as bad as yours) but by removing the valve & cleaning most of the gunky deposits from inside & around the spring & plunger this appears to have cured it -- it hasn't happened since!

Good Luck
