Caff Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 I recently had the ABS warning light coming on occasionally and realised that my brake lights weren't working. Having had a good read on the forum I assumed the problem was the brake pedal switch and some aggressive pumping on the brakes seemed to remove the warning light's appearance. The brakes were fine by the way! Well I stopped normally. Today I caught my left foot on the brake pedal as I depressed the clutch (no comment!), the car jolted a little as it would and I thought nothing of it. The rest of the journey was downhill and needed no acceleration. On my next journey I had to floor the accelerator to get away from a wally  The car accelerated and then I lost power. Of course I was going up hill which made it worse. It was as if the turbo wasn't working and I was driving a different car and having to use the gears to get any acceleration. Thought the turbo had gone but there were no terrifying noises. Disconnecting the MAF airflow meter made no difference. I thought I'd check the postings on the forum again and began to wonder about the brake switch and whether my footwork had upset it! Holding the revs at 2500 and pressing the brake made the engine speed drop to tick-over as described elsewhere. Did this three times. Other half took the gal out before trying to find the switch and suddenly all is back to normal. Strange! Is it the brake switch? Is there a way to reset the brake switch sensors. I'm sure I read about it somewhere. Do you think a new switch is in order? Anyone else had these strange problems! Caff Quote
Dave-G Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004  This occurred on my new [to me] Gal, I redistributed the lump of grease that was "around" the plunger so that it again came into contact with said plunger and have had no problem since  Quote
Topbloke Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 sounds like classic brakelight switch problems to me if your car is a manual you should have two switches the best thing would be to change them both considering your previous problems they are about 10/12 quid each Quote
Caff Posted November 14, 2004 Author Report Posted November 14, 2004 Yes I'll be changing the switches, not the most expensive of repairs. Thank goodness! What I am wondering is what reset the "fault". Was it braking with the accelerator depressed? And do I just exchange the switches or is there some black magic to be performed like pumping the brake pedal three times and switching the ignition on and off. Quote
