Guest j_mchattie Posted November 10, 2004 Report Posted November 10, 2004 I replaced my timing belt a few weeks ago. I did the work myself, and followed the book to the letter. However, i have an unidentified noise. There is a clacking noise between about 2100 and 2600 RPM, idle is fine, so is anything above 2600. I took the belt inspection top cover off in a car park, and it seems that the belt wants to sit to one side now, not in the middle of the cam pullys as it did before. There is also a shiney line (like a light rub) appearing on the cover side of the belt. The belt sits away from the engine block, but still on the pullies - just not as close to the block as before. Strange thing is, it only happens when the engine is cold - once its warmed up it stops completely. The noise is like a vibration, and is from the top of the covers - near the cam pullies. At first i thought it was a loose cover, but its not. Any help would be greatly appreciated, im baffled James Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Come on people! SOMEONE must have an idea. It seems as though it warms up and moves to where it should be, but when cold it contracts and moves away from the block. PLEASE help! I dont want to wreck my engine! Thanks James McHattie Quote
Guest neil_wiles Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Idler Pulley bearing possibly or indeed just the belt itself. Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 It sounds too high to be a bearing. Its sounds like its coming from the top of the covers. It almost sounds like its slapping the top cover, but i dont see how this could happen without stalling/ruining the engine. And i have no idea why it appers to sit away from the block when cold Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 Possibly something out of alignment? And when the belt is cold and shorter it can'f follow the path the pulleys want it to - when it warms up, and stretches a little it can?? Sounds feasable - but one thing for certain - I would not be even running the motor until it is sorted! Mike Quote
Guest EVSS Posted November 11, 2004 Report Posted November 11, 2004 had this on a 1.6 zetec, check your tension . run the engine with the top timing cover off and see if the belt is moving up and down between the 2 cams when lightly revved. if so you need to reset the belt. Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Ok, thanks for your help. ill be checking that this evening. James Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 My tension was wrong. Tightened it up again now and all is good in the world. Thanks for your help James Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Now im getting a slight whistle, like a turbo! But this time, its only when the engine is up to temperature. Pully bearing? The belt is nice and tight now, can it be too tight? James Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 A whisle or a whine indicates it's too tight! Mike Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Is this dangerous? I mean, sure - ill have ti rip it apart AGAIN! but surely its not as bad as it being too loose? Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 15, 2004 Report Posted November 15, 2004 Just as dangerous - it can snap due to being overloaded - Sorry.. Mike Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 OK, just got in from loosening the bloody belt!Seems ok now, no rattle when cold, no whistle when warm. The final test will be when i take it for a drive, and the engine gets nice and toasty. Im getting better at this belt renewal thing - the first time it took about 3 or 4 hours, now i can do it in 1! Thanks for your help - i MAY be back! James Quote
