It's happens to me ! Rogue garage swopped spare and O/S rear last weekend

and have now had to get the local Fraud garage to remove the alloy in the spare position using brut force. Winch appears to be broken as will not lower more than

about 6 inches. Fraud says only solution is to replace it at a massive cost of

Tell the rogue garage they have broken it would be my first call.

Is the Gal still under 3 years old? If so, the winch will be replaced under warranty, as mine was a few weeks ago.

Having looked at mine before it was replaced, it appears that you can remove the winch from the car by undoing 2 allen key bolts under the car and removing the winch assembly.

You can probably then unwind it off the car and then re-wind, but I can't say for sure. The cable is probably chewed up inside.

The rogue garage was whilst I was on holiday 200 miles away !! Unfortunately the

car is 3years 4 months old but I do have an extended warranty but this will be a difficult one to argue especially as the Ford Warranty company has gone bust and then seem very difficult to get approval from (speaking from past experience !)

Think I might try taking it apart and having a go at re-winding it - it's cheaper than

Unbolt it and have a good look to see if it is still serviceable - may just be that the spindle has seized up. The mk2 got a zinc coated winch, but is still succpetable to corrosion. Get it off to inspect / rewind / grease... Or

If it's knackered then replace it - but not at the cost you stated...

Guess what I was doing on Saturday night ? Grappling with a jammed spare wheel winch in the pouring rain. It's only a few weeks since I used it last time, when it came right out to allow the wheel to stand against the bumper without a problem. The garage put the tyre back again, but apparently without problem. Trying to get it out this time it dropped a few inches, but then as I continued to wind down it went back up again! Eventually, by sitting on the road I managed to push the wheel up with my knees and undo the fastening. I've removed the winch (took 2 minutes) but I can't see how to get into it.

Can anybody tell me how to break it open ?

Why did you try it out at the week-end? Some sort of sadistic punishment? To make others envious?

I think the cable must get kinked and if you wind it up with a loose cable it jams.

When I had to get my spare changed, I wound it down. The tyre fitter was about to wind it back up after he changed the tyre, but I stopped him and did it my self. He had pushed the wheel under the car and the cable was kinking everywhere. I pulled it out and kept the cable tight and it was fine.

Many thanks Bigjeeze, that's what I needed to know. Oily mitts and lots of cursing for me this weekend.

Ah yes, but you can get lots of cursing for

When the spare is winched up and locked in place the winch can be overtightened causing the cable to interlock with previous windings on the drum. This causes the effect of a six inch drop and continue winding then causes the wheel to move upwards again. Try winching down a little and then at the lowest point of travel put extra weight onto the wheel to assist in pulling the cable from the drum and overcoming its tendency to stay fast in the previously wound cable. Time and effort will usually resolve the problem, once the wheel is finally off and your refitting it don't put the wheel directly under the winch leaving loose rope, refit the wheel ensuring the cable is under tension all the time.

Thanks for that - it is exactly what I did - removed whole winch from vehicle (2 bolts) and then put it into a vice and raised/lowered it under strain and lubed it until it became free enough to put back onto the vehicle. Now it's fingers crossed until I have a puncture....
