Guest SaraSeahorse Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 Driving merrily along today having promised to take my 3 young kids for lunch at one of those ball soft play places. One of the rear electric windows failed as I was closing - now stuck about an inch open (have taped over with polythene and clear tape as emergency measure for now) took to local ford garage which was on route asked if they could do anythign to shut window as temp measure (everyone goes home at 12 and this was just after eleven) they have diagnosed (without checking anything as far as I can tell) that it is a ?voltage regulator and it will be over Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 Does the window still open from the switch? have you tried closeing it with the global closure system from the key? it could be as simple as the wires in the loom breaking down, a common cause of electrical failures in doors, hatches etc, althoughto get the window closed fully it could be a case of off with the door card and manually closing the window till you can get it fixed, at least that way the car will be sealed from the elements and more secure! Quote
Guest SaraSeahorse Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 the window will not close from either the door switch or the dash board switch sorry for being thick but what is the global closure system my key only works in the door now the button thing on fob failed twice and the local ford garage charged a bomb to redo it and it still didn't work! will try finding the car manual how does one manually close window - ford garage did not do this (I think the chap must have just pushed the glass up as it slid back down again - duh could have done that myself!!) its 1997 P reg if that makes any difference Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 sorry for being thick but what is the global closure system stick the key in the lock and turn it as to lock the car and hold it in the locking position, any window that are open should now close and will do untill you release the key, the same thing applies to opening the windows but hold the key in the unlocking position, if the window doesnt work from any of the switches then I would hazzard a guess at either the wiresin the loom, the motor or the winder cable mech being duff, I know its a bit risky and the gap could get bigger but see if the window opens from any of the switches? if it does you are looking at a fault in the closing side of the mech/wiring Quote
Guest SaraSeahorse Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 Update worked out how do do the global closure thing - many thanks window has now closed I also opened door and - not very technical here - jiggled/squeezed the rubber tube that hoses the wires to the door hey presto window is now working again broken wire me thinks! Ford Garage - well I shall ring them Monday and complain about how they would have carried out unnecessary work - broken wire hardly merits replaces another part and Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 nice one, now all you need to do is check out the wires and replace/repair the bad ones before they short out and do any damage! Quote
Guest SaraSeahorse Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 now you are scaring me! I take it its not an ignore it and live with it type of thing then I am not competent nor have the patience for this sort of thingI will ask my trustworthy independent mechanic to sort it out - if he cannto do it he will know someone who can that won't rip me off! I shall still be giving the Ford Garage a piece of my mind! What they have done today is comparable with saying that if your car won't start if it had flat battery that you need a new engine idiots Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 in meantime window stays shut until I get someone trustworthy and cheaper to find exact problem and not a ficticious expensive one IIRC your in northampton? if so try LION GARAGE 01604 750757 their an indie VW garage, cheaper than Ford/VW :o and helpful with it, they have done a lot of work for me over the last few years on both my MK2 GTI and my Galaxy Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 now you are scaring me! I take it its not an ignore it and live with it type of thing then no not that scary but you could come back to a car full of water if the cables short out and cause the window to open while your not there! or even worse the passenger in that seat get a face full as you drive along :o Quote
Guest seatalhambra Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 Sounds like the same problem I was having wiht my tailgate cent locking. I was shocked at the number of cracked insulation on the wires on a car four years old and one broken wire.V tempted to lobby seat? any suggestions on how, without wasting time. (again sorry for multi postings as computer give strange response indicating it has not gone. Quote
delboyt Posted October 30, 2004 Report Posted October 30, 2004 hi m8on the broken wireeasy way is to cut where it's broken & add a long piece of wire & solder it on the old one'sthen cealt it up & push either end into the car body & door worth a try if it's broken in the rubber boot part Quote
