Guest ajc Posted October 25, 2004 Report Posted October 25, 2004 My TDi is making a whining noise from in front of the driver and a knocking when going around a left hand bend. I thought it was the wheel bearing but I've just had the car Mot'd today and when the put it on the rolling road, the noise was still there regardless of which wheel they stopped. Could this be the inner CV or does it sound (pardon the pun) like something inside the diff? Allan Quote

Guest Russell Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 :) I broke down today after a horrible noise and vibration coming from the auto box (1.9TDi 110). Had to call Mr AA for the first time in years. Turns out this chap knows his stuff, he informs me it's not the box but the rubber middle joint on the offside drive shaft. Bargain I think, cheaper than a box. Hopefully I can get the part seperately, looks like the inner drive shaft? Thing is though I've got an ABS fault which Mr AA confirms is the ABS sensor ring coming loose. I might get both done at the same time if I have to get a whole new driveshaft. I found a new whloe driveshaft for Quote
Guest Jonderonde Posted December 2, 2004 Report Posted December 2, 2004 Is Your box a 4 speed? If so acording to the ford Technical manual the drive shaft is diferent from the later 1.9 tdi 5 speed boxes. You probably be able to get a non fraud ( :) )part as you said. The design changed on the 5 speed auto box Unfortunatley I could not get just the broken part for my motor :) . I kept the old shaft hoping to get parts later. Glad it was not your Auto box. :) Attached is a pdf file of latest galaxy drive shaft arangements. Quote

Guest ajc Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 The problem turned out to be BOTH front wheel bearings. This explains why a local garage thought it was the diff when they tried the standard test of putting on their MoT rolling road and stopping each wheel in turn with a crowbar (this messes up the ABS sensing by th eway and it takes 70 miles to reset) and the noise was still there. A transmission specialist said that it wasn't the diff - no clunking coming on/off load. Took it to the local Ford dealer (very good but expensive). They took me through their diagnostic process. Apparently it is no good trying to find the fault by road testing because the noise from the wheel bearing transmits into the diff. Also the plastic underboard acts as a soundbox. What they do is to lift the car off the ground and spin the wheel by hand with your ear very close to the wheel. If the bearing has gone, you can hear a slight whine. Since the bearing is a 2 inch wide needle roller job, you won't be able to feel any play. The chief mechanic was very surprised that both had gone together and was a bit worried that this might not be the only problem but having replaced both bearings, noise has gone completely. They showed me both bearings and you can feel the roughness as they rotate. He said that they had previously only replaced two bearings in the lifetime of the Galaxy and that was on two different vehicles. Quote
Guest vr6galaxy Posted December 31, 2004 Report Posted December 31, 2004 I had both front wheel bearing replaced three months ago, I had a little noise from the front end and that got noisier on the bends so to be on the safe side I had both replaced to be sure :o the front end is a lot quieter now :P Quote
