MrT Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 I noticed the other night an unused wire and pin on the clock connector... The output I presume! Can you smell burning? Are you sure this wire runs to the clock connector? You may well be right, but on some Galaxies, there is an extra wire that connects to the two-diode protected earth signal on the internal light. This earths when the light is on by either the integral switch or the courtesy light system. This extra wire is to stop the auto-dim function on the mirrors (where fitted) whilst the internal light is on. Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 8, 2004 Report Posted November 8, 2004 Had a good look on TIS, and it looks feasibly possible - but remember, the control panel for the Aux heating is part of the digital clock, not the standard dash mount one - So I would think that any relevant wiring would be in the headlining above the mirror, rather than behind the clock... Guest blatters Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Update on Aux Heater Fix  OK, it appears that we have a result people! It's been a week since the modified aux heater was added to my Galaxy. The result appears to be (1) the end of the ticking noise and (2) the end of the white smoke. The smoke took a few days to die down. But for the last few cold days (tonight it was down to 3c on the way home) there is no smoke so it looks promising. Tomorrow, weather permitting, I'll get a couple of jpeg shots of the revised unit and post them to the site. I've also got some 'before' shots showing how a single Galaxy can contribute more smoke than Russian industrial city! So the ticking fix is available for sure. The smoke fix is probably complete. Get down to your Ford dealer if you have previously suffered the same problems. .........Blatters. PS. Thankfully, the jet engine noise is still there - the pitch has changed but still sounds great! GSMGuy Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Hmm.. 3.0deg outside tonight, so thought I'd take it for a run to see just what all the fuss is about.... Nothing, no noise, no smoke, and no bloody heat from it either... Did 5 miles and the heater was getting warm inside, but on the 3 occasions I stopped, the Aux heater was stone cold and silent... So looks like I have a fault.. Will it show up on diagnostic? If not any hints on where to start? Mike Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 12, 2004 Report Posted November 12, 2004 Ah, yes, but was it below 5DegC in the engine compartment, because that is where the sensor is. Quote
GSMGuy Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 MM - take it it was, BUT, when fiting the Cruise Control a couple of weeks ago, took the opportunity of getting hold of the sensor (it's clipped to the wiper mech arm) and plunging it into ICE - a meter confirmed that the switch had closed, had the motor running and still no Aux heater.. Mike Quote
Tigger Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 Ford have allowed for this ice plunge test so the computer will not start the heater  My heater has a mind of its own. You can do a good 5 miles before it comes on, even when it seems to be getting warmer. i should think it is linked to the climate controle fan. That does'nt know what to do either! B) Quote
Masked Marauder Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 Well I read somewhere that after five failed start attempts it gives up and needs re-set. Quote
Guest blatters Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 Help uploading the images Does anyone know how I can upload the images? I have them in both jpeg and gif format. They are only about 60k each in size but the site keeps rejecting them because it says 'they are either too big or the wrong format'. If anyone can tell me how to attach them then you can have a look at the fix etc. Thanks. Blatters. Quote
Guest blatters Posted November 13, 2004 Report Posted November 13, 2004 OK, appears from other threads that, since the site was upgraded, we can't attach images yet. So I'll hang onto them until the site starts working again. In the meantime, this morning (Saturday) there was a frost and the aux heater was on not long after pulling away. No smoke or ticking so confident problem resolved by dealer with the modified stuff. Well done David Harrison, Ford dealer in Peebles and Galashiels, Scottish Borders. Masked Marauder: The dealer told me a couple of weeks ago that the aux heater tries to fire up three times and, if something is wrong, it leaves a message each time with a computer(?). After the third attempt it will not try to fire up again until a dealer has downloaded the fault codes and reset it. Unfortunately, they didn't tell me how to reset it! Blatters........ Quote
Guest mick Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Ages since I've used this forum. But found myself looking through due to same snag with my Gal. As the temperature has been steadily dropping in the mornings, so I have been expecting the booster heater to kick in. This has not been happening - no ticking or turbine noise, but I have been getting masses of the white smoke. I did have a quick look at the heater, but apart from a drip of fuel, there appears to be nothing to fiddle with. Guess I'll have to take a trip to the local Frord dealer, and try and get them to reset the system, or investigate further. Quote
Guest blatters Posted November 16, 2004 Report Posted November 16, 2004 Mick, Might be useful to print this email thread out and show it to them. Seems that loads of Galaxy owners are told that the aux heater is meant to operate like that and it's a VW problem - i.e. no action. Clearly, my Ford dealer has taken a positive approach to customer service and, as at today, things are just fine - no smoke or ticking noise. All the best. .........Blatters  Quote
Guest fincleygal Posted November 17, 2004 Report Posted November 17, 2004 Hi guys, I'm a new member - My wife had the White smoke, and called the AA -Now Local Ford Garage says it will cost Pounds 456 to replace - any comments ? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted November 17, 2004 Report Posted November 17, 2004 How long did the smoke last? If only for a few seconds then everything is working normally. Quote
Guest mick Posted November 29, 2004 Report Posted November 29, 2004 Gal went to garage last Monday. Some confusion as to which heater we were talking about - it seems most Gals here (NL) have the aux heater rather than the booster. Garage kept car overnight as booster diagnosed as duff and new had to be ordered. Fitted tuesday. Drove car on Wednesday morning with temp around 2 deg below 0. Booster had flashed up before I had managed to scrape all the side windows and engulfed me with masses of white smoke & fumes!! Car looked as if it was on fire with the amount of smoke it was producing whilst I was driving to work! Ticking still there, but don't mind that. Heated the engine and inside considerably faster than when heater not working. I had not appreciated how effective this was.Smoke seems to have settled down, but will monitor for a while. Quote
Guest fredt Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Masked Marauder, here we go someones beaten you it! they do an add on remote/timer kit for the aux heater Quote
GSMGuy Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Masked Marauder, here we go someones beaten you it! they do an add on remote/timer kit for the aux heater Fred, I think they only work with Webasto's own heaters  Wonder if one of the controllers could be adapted though???? Guest fredt Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004  ooopps posted the wrong link try this one at the bottom of the page it say's........... Your direct injection diesel has an auxiliary heater. With only a few additional components, your auxiliary heater can become a fully fledged Thermo Top parking heater. We will be pleased to advise you. Quote
Guest blatters Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 OK checked the link but then where? Do we have to contact them for details or is there something else on their website? Request a brochure? Fred / MM / Ivor, where next? Blatters Quote
Guest fredt Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 I think from the We will be pleased to advise you. that it's a case of contacting them for further info, I'm after one of their Hotshot devices! from the write up in Volkswagen Driver it seems a good bit of kit! Quote
Guest blatters Posted December 3, 2004 Report Posted December 3, 2004 Brochure requested - sounds interesting especially if technical skill is low (and price too, I think!) Thanks for the link, much appreciated. Blatters Quote
Guest pnwheels Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 I have just upgraded my late mk 1 sharan to a parking heater. Bought a kit from Eberspacher (who make the aux heaters) It included control box, elec pump, hoses and timer. If you have Climatronic you need an extra relay for the interor fans. About 3hrs work. purchased from R.Thursby (www.rthursby.co.uk) the instructions are in German only! but not too hard to follow. A highly recommended upgrade for your shalaxy!! Quote
Guest fredt Posted December 4, 2004 Report Posted December 4, 2004 Any idea of the price for your fellow TDI owners? Quote
