riz Posted October 20, 2004 Report Posted October 20, 2004 Hello and firstly let me thank the person who started this place, it has been extremely useful in the past, but on this issue I can not find any other posts. I bought this mpv about 2 months back and it has always had this issue which can be drowned out by level 1 on the radio which can give you an idea of how loud it is. It can only be described as some form of feedback, the kind you would expect to hear if a suppressor was not fitted on a radio, but it is still prominent even with the radio off. It also increases and decreases with acceleration, and a new auto gearbox was fitted a few months back, not sure if that is relevent. Adding to the decription a little further, if you have ever heard a kind of whistle/high pitced noise that comes through a mobile phone conversation, when someone is driving but silent, that would pretty much sum it up. Thanks in advance.riz. 2.3 ghia - S reg - auto - petrol Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 20, 2004 Report Posted October 20, 2004 Is it audible at idle (engine on, but car stationary)? Quote
riz Posted October 20, 2004 Author Report Posted October 20, 2004 Is it audible at idle (engine on, but car stationary)? No it's not, only when accelerating and it seems to drop levels on auto gear change. Thankyou for reply. Quote
Denis Posted October 20, 2004 Report Posted October 20, 2004 Well the fan belt (or multi belt?) tensioner is a common cause of high pitched whining noises on the 2.3 engine. At first it is very subtle- I noticed mine long before my wife could hear it. It takes several '000 miles to get to be a serious nusiance. I think I am correct riz, that the pitch of the noise varies with the revs of the engine? Quote
seatkid Posted October 21, 2004 Report Posted October 21, 2004 If this low level noise is a very high pitched whistle/sizzle - like the old 405 line tellys used to make (10khz upwards) sometimes slightly intermittent, then that describes the sound I had...which is....the mirrors! More specifically the small vertical gap betwwen the mirror and the door where it swivels.Very irritating...A small piece of draught excluder fixed it for me. Quote
