Guest j_mchattie Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 Im changing my timing belt, but i cant get the crankshaft pully bolt to undo. Apart from the ratchet extension idea, has anyone got any others? Ive just made a 42" breaker bar to try out tommorow Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 The haynes manual says to put it in 5th, and hold the foot brake to hold the crankshaft still. It works a bit, but theres a lot of twist in the system - is there a better way? Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 There blooming well ought to be! Isn't there something behind the pulley to wedge a tommy bar or bracing strut against (assuming that the pulley has holes in it)? Maybe you need a length of scaffolding pole welded to your socket spanner! Quote
Guest fredt Posted October 19, 2004 Report Posted October 19, 2004 There is mention on the TIS of a crank shaft immobilisation tool :D it may be worth your while asking your local car spares shop or Halfords if they stock such a thing? with the crank shaft pully locked off solidly the bolt may come out a bit easier? Guest j_mchattie Posted October 20, 2004 Report Posted October 20, 2004 Ive just finished replacing the timing belt. You WILL need: An 18mm Deep reach socket - for older models with a U shaped engine mountA MASSIVE breaker bar for the crankshaft bolt, this was a REAL pain in the ass. I had to keep tightening and loosening it to work it free. It should be torqued to 130ftlbs, thats pretty immense to you and me. And of course all the usual tools. Quote
