Guest j_mchattie Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 My car has a Cat, and is injected. There are a few redex products out there to clean the engine - its done 145k. Does this stuff actually work? despite what it says, is it safe to use? Quote
johnb80 Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Yes it's safe to use BUT I don't think it will make any significant difference. Regards - John Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Weight reduction it is then! Thanks Quote
_dg Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 When I used this on previous cars it worked well when poured into the cylinders' for de-coking, but I never noticed any difference on mpg when used as a petrol additive. I did get better performance and better starting after the clean out Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 Which one did you use to do that? I guess the injector one only works if its in with the fuel. I was going to do the cylinder de-coke, but which product should i use? Thanks Quote
johnb80 Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 I'd be VERY careful about decoking in this way. Many people used to do this back in the 60's and there are dangers to this technique. The traditional way of decoking by removing the head allowed you to leave a ring of carbon around the edge of the piston so that you didn't reduce compression by decoking. The back of the inlet valves is another area where redex doesn't get to. What happens if a lump of carbon breaks off after the treatment, where does it go ? My advice would be to play it safe, if it's running reasonably well, leave it alone. If it needs a decoke, take the head off and do it properly. Regards - JB Quote
Guest j_mchattie Posted October 10, 2004 Report Posted October 10, 2004 True, i was considering taking the head off. Oh well, thanks for the advice - think ill let it be. James Quote
