Ho, ho. There seems to be a theme developing here; people with personalised no. plates might be a bit silly. This morning I saw a couple of identical BMWs one behind the other, I don't know the model, the flash one (aren't they all?) with the very narrow grill, looks as if it's been sat on (6 or 7 series coupe?), both with personalised no. plates. For some reason the words 'pair of tossers' flashed through my mind, quite unfairly, as they were driving in an exemplary fashion, doing no particular harm to anyone.

The only person I have known at all well who deliberately acquired a personalised no. plate was an otherwise very sensible and pleasant woman. Perhaps a contributor with a personalised no. plate can tell us what the attraction is. Are they a decent investment? I suppose it depends on your initials.

I went for a personal plate (*1 T**) as it was a cheaper option than buying a new car. No-one knows how old your car is and I as I have changed the trim to the 2004 chrome, the car looks just like new. (with the exception of stone chips on the bonnet).

So I have a car that looks new, is in perfect working order and

I wish I could afford a non-dating late for my car too - for that reason, that people don't know how old it is. My parents have a very nice number plate that they got in the 1960's on a used car they bought, 2 pairs of double numbers then 2 letters (something like 2211 AM but this is not their plate). They thought the seller was going to keep it, but it was allocated as a replacement number for the "original" that the previous owner transferred, which had 999 as the numerical part of a three number and three letter plate.

I personally don't think the age of a car matters at all, at the end of the day it's the condition and running order that matters. My Galaxy is now just over a year old and looks as good as the day it came out of the showroom, no scratches, dings, marks of any kind (why did you lot let me say that  ) There's one round the corner from me, only 3 months old, never washed or polished, wheels have been kerbed etc would I want his newer plate .... NO

I saw G41AXY was for sale some months ago, then disappeared off the number plate "retailers" sites. IIRC the price at the time was around

So far as the age is concerned, surely if you're flogging it the potential buyer is going to see the logbook (or whatever it's called these days) or just ask you, and so will know how old it is. Am I missing something?

The bike racer Steve Parrish had the best one - PEN 15

Said his wife wouldn't drive it

I saw that one, PEN 15, when I was but a whippersnapper in 1974, it was appropriately on a Mustang Mach II, I saw it again in a motoring magazine about 10 years later on a big Merc, I've just rattled my money box to see if I'm any closer to getting it <_<

I saw this one, B8 WAT, on a Beemer more recently, took me a little time to work it out (dead brain cells) but it was appropriate fo the way it was being driven.

Thanks for the comments regarding the nos., at least it has caused a little discussion. Boggler, where did you see PEN 15 on the Mustang? I saw it parked in west London at about the same time '73-'74.

The Merc would have been Mr Parrish, or Stavros, as he was known.

This was the guy who (allegedly) put a dirty oil pan underneath another manufacturers brand new display bike at a show, and got sick of kids jumping on a small show bike and trying to kick start it, so he (allegedly) connected the HT lead to some thin wire wrapped around the twist grip

Bloke's a good 'un

Who's talking about flogging it, if it was sold I would retain the number?

Leaving the social wrongs and rights out of this, many people want to have the latest car and be seen in it. A car is a status symbol, it is perceived to reflect your success and wealth. Some people spend a lot of money to try and achieve this, eg BMW drivers.

So if you want to look like you have the latest car, you don't want your number plate to give away the fact that it is several years old. It's a lot cheaper to buy a plate that hides the age than to buy a newer car that will do nothing that the existing one does not. This works fine and well until they bring out a new model.

The drive to make your car look new is so great that the DVLA will not allow number plates on car that make them appear newer than they are, so you cannot put a 54 plate on your 51 reg car. If this was allowed people would buy new plates in preference to new cars and the motor industry would get most upset.

For Andee, I saw it in Headington, Oxford. A mate at School said to me one day you've got to come and look at this car. When I saw the plate on the Merc it was in a popular Mens magazine, which I only ever bought for the motoring articles of course. :o

I popped down to Halfords and got some plates made up which, when placed in a line says

"H3LL0 M7 N4M3 I5 D9 4ND 1 C4N7 4FF0RD 4 R34L 93R50N4L153D 9L4T3, 8UT W4N73D Y0U 4LL T0 7H1NK 7H4T 1 W45 R3ALL7 C00L - 1"

My real number plate is below this, so its a cheap way to impress people you don't know and who will never meet you.

I don't believe you. I think that you're taking the piss out of people with personalised plates. How unkind.

BTW, I have a beach towel with my initials on it. I've no idea why.

So do I, my initials though not yours :o I too have no idea why? as I hate sand :o sand should be mixed with concrete or made into glass, its not for sitting on and getting in places where the sun doesnt shine :D can you tell I'm not a beach holiday person? :D

I bought my personalised plate simply because I liked it, no relevance to hiding the age of the car as it was an 02 plate at the time I bought it, makes my 53 plate alambra look old now

Gonna be shafted after I sell my pub though might have to try and flog it or become more of an alcoholic :D
