My Galaxy is suffering an annoying engine rattle on tickover. The noise seems more pronounced if the car is is facing slightly downhill. It appears to me to be getting slowly worse and was noticeable shorlty after 50K service by dealer.

Any thoughts??

Thanks for your reply Neil... I assume you mean cam belt tensioner? As it 'appens Cam belt and associated parts were allegedly replaced at the last service.

I've just taken the car for a short spin and found that the rattle seems to peak just as the car comes to halt under light braking, still think its the belt tensioner?

Cheers!

First thought - what didn't they put back properly? Check that engine undertray is fitted correctly, and that engine is not moving on its mountings. Have you opened the bonnet and had a good look around, trying to touch "things" to make sure that all is secure?

 Thanks Ivor-E, a few things to check I think....Time for a rummage under the bonnet!

Cheers!

Does that rattle stop if you apply some power to the engine, I have the had the same and it finally (after another 15k miles) became evident it was the shaft of the alternator belt tensioner wearing it way through the cast mounting.

Always appeared during slow braking then as it worsened it appeared during idle then finally all the time.

 Try stuffing a tissue/cloth between the front part of the undercover and the area it rests on, i found a very annoying rattle there <_<
