I'm sure that there will be comments about galaxys in general, but i would not be worried about high mileage diesels, as long as there has been regular servicing. How high is high mileage?

1st Check the usual things..

a) V5 - does the owner own it and does he owe money on it? How many previous owners? If he only had it a couple of months it could indicate it has a problem.

:D Service history/bills - check it out with the dealer or garage that stamped it, is it genuine?

c) Look for accident damage thats been covered up.

d) Rust - Check those sills for damage from sloppy garages and wheel arches.

e) Test drive it, check performance, look for signs of oil consumption (smoke), unusual sounds from engine or suspension. Check clutch/gearbox works smoothly.

Check ABS (if fitted) works.

f)Check every electrical item works. Check a/c is working. Check tyres for uneven or unusual wear. Check exhaust is not about to drop to bits. Check Central locking/keys/locks

Make sure that you haggle a significant reduction if

1) the A/c is knackered - (if its been recently regassed suspect a leak.)

2) the performance is naf - could be one of several things, MAF, turbo, sensors, piping, some expensive.

3) ABS not working

4) Knocking sounds from suspension

5) Tyres (inc spare) worn, or cheapo tyres fitted.

6) Brakes/Discs worn

7) Clutch worn or done more than 80,000 miles since last change.

8) Cambelt overdue for change (expensive) or if tensioning roller wasnt changed.

9) Be aware PD engines serviced with the wrong oil could suffer camshaft problems - very expensive. Models prior to 2000 are not PD so this doesnt apply.

10) no/short MOT/Tax

11) something else e.g. electrical item doesn't work

12) if major work done that you're not entirely happy with.

If its burning oil or theres a gearbox problem - just walk away.

So as you can see from what seatkid has put, there`s not much to look for really ! Let`s face it what ever you buy secondhand there is normally something not quite right, especially with cars. My "V" reg tdi has now got 175500 odd miles on the clock now and still runs well, never uses any oil or water and still returns excellent fuel consumption. I fitted a MAF sensor shortly after buying it, but apart from that it`s never needed much done to it...........yet!

And don't forget to check the all important under engine tray is still there......

Welcome! The engine in question has chain-driven camshaft so no worries about belt change/breakage. At this mileage, much will depend on how the car has been treated during its life. So long as it has been driven sympathetically and the oil/water levels checked regularly, and topped up when necesssary, there is no reason why it should start to smoke - this engine IIRC was developed by Cosworth Engineering and is a good design althoughsome spares can be a bit expensive. ABS niggles, electrical woes ref central locking etc largely depend upon water/debris ingress (!) and I have my own theory that vehicles covered at night (garaged or under carport) will stand a better chance of growing old without too many niggling problems. First step would be to check the two "storage box" cubby holes, one under each front seat, and make sure they are dry. Gearbox should be robust, clutch will depend on previous use (both my last 2 cars went over 100,000 miles on their original clutches). Suspension bushes - don't know, but anti-roll bar drop links wear out at variable mileages - the ones on my car were shot when I bought it used at 26 months old and under 20,000 miles! Head gasket should be fine; wheel bearings is another "don't know" as far as I am concerned.

Grease monkey stuff - make sure it is serviced at least once per year - change the oil at the very least, and if it has air con, make sure it is topped up at least once every 2 years and preferably pumped down, dried and re-filled once every 4 years max. Fingers crossed and good luck.....

Don't forget to check the tyre pressures regularly - they are much higher than on most contemporary cars!

oh yeah

whats the si bit stand for?

SI was a replacement for XR when all the joy riders were TWOCing XR3 i's and Cossy's it was a way round the higher insurance premiums put on the hot hatches due to the higher chance of theft of an XR :( the under age illiterate holligans didnt know what it stood for so they didnt knick it as it had no street cred

apart from the fact that it sit's inbetween the GLX and the GHIA in the product range and got a couple of extra bits I dont know either

on my 2nd tdi alhambra

1st one did 180k from nearly new no problems other than maf sensor replaced at 100k and roll bar links every 80k

make sure it has full oil change history with correct oil (very important)

my old one was still running as well as when it was new when i sold it to upgrade to 130se and didn't need oil top up between services (10k)

new one is more powerfull 130bhp compared to 115 and is more economical

typically turning in 50 mpg with mixed use (taxi)

have had 65mpg on one occasion but kept under 60mph and used cruise most of the journey......would not want to drive like that all the time!!!!
