No scientific answer. Some say there is no difference, others that it is "better". One advantage is that rear-seat passengers get their own airvents. Depends on whether or not you value a stream of cold air, or just like to sit in a climate-controlled atmosphere!

Thanks again Ivor (meeting all over the place. What I noticed with my last one that didn't have Rear Climate was that the rearmost passengers took a long time to feel the effects of the cold air from the front. I wondered if having their own vents really did make a difference.

Is it the same basic aircon system or is it uprated to take the extra load.

I have owned a 2002 model without rear aircon and I now own a 2003 model with rear aircon.

Would say that rear aircon is certainly worth it. This summer, my kids have told me that it's too cold in the back dad and by increasing the rear temp by one or two degrees has made them more comfortable - especially at night when they want to doze off.

The effects are suttle and take some time to take effect but they do.

I have a relative who's had many many, new Galaxys usually a new one every 6 months or less and he generally ticks all the options boxes. However, he didn't last time around, the general opinon of the rear a/c was, that it was sorely missed. For the front passengers there's no real difference but a massive loss of comfort for everyone else. He opted for a manual too on a whim and reasoned that on his long journeys, mainly in Germany he's in top gear any way, so that wasn't missed, but the extra fuel saving and performance was considerable, plus he got 130 bhp (Tdi) not 115. I wouldn't give you tuppence for the flashy very bouncy wheels & tyres though, reminded me of early Escort XR3 s Ugh!

I can't make a comparison, but I can say that I occasionally put the back warmer than the front, if the kids want to sleep. I wouldn't pay extra for it, 'though, and it's just another thing to go wrong with the air con.

Should be picking new car up on saturday, reading the replies looks like rear climate is worth it, (until it goes wrong :( ). Will post another reply once we've had chance to test it properly.

Another thing to go wrong ? so is cruise control, fuel injection, auto gears, central locking, intermittent wipers, heated rear window, radio, cd multi-changer, sat nav, electric windows etc...... but I still want all of em ! :(
