I have an 04' galaxy with a 6 disc in dash stereo which I wish to add an aux input to so that I can play my ipod through the cars stereo.

I think I need an FM modulator to do this and as far as I can see these need to be connected inline with the antenna and fed some power.

Can anyone tell me if this is easy to do and offer tips on the best way to go about it. I would like to make the installation as discreet as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

I too wish to use my ipod via the car stereo but i am using a tape addapter at the moment, did you know that you can buy an fm modulator that plugs into the pod and all you do is tune your radio into the preset frequence 87.9 i think . this may be about the same price and would be another alternative :(

There are many FM Modulators for your IPOD that are specially designed to be used in this way.

In fact apple have an office one called the iTRIP which is good and controlled by the 'Pod but uses the iPOD's battery so isn't great for long jouneys without a external power supply.

however they are 'technically' illegal in the UK, something todo with it broadcasting, essentially making ur iPOD a radio station....

Check out ebay there are all loads there....

Or.....

Get a new stereo that has aux inputs built in (Like mine :D )

I know we have had a thread or two on this before about the time I bought myself an FM modulator from Radio Shack. I've found that its more convient to have an external portable type one which uses either batteries or its own ciggie lighter connection. It is very small and can be used with ANY audio output socket on any device. My boy has used it on his Ipod and we tend to use it for the on board DVD in the car so we can have the sound through all the speakers.

Been looking out for a wireless one for the same reason as you (dvd player)

I do have an aftermakret head unit - an Alpine and the lead just plugs in at the back and comes up as an AUX on the head unit. The other end just plugs into the headphone socket on the iPod.

I have the cable coming up into the centre storage box, so that it is completly out of sight when closed.

I heard that Alpine do a unit now that displays your iPod song name/artist etc on the unit itself, but don't know what it costs.

There is one problem using inline FM modulators in that some of them effectively disconnect the external aerial whilst in use which prevents the radio from scanning other channels for traffic information. You need one which adds in its signal rather than replacing the existing signal.

Another problem is that the galaxy puts power down its anntenna feed to power the antenna amplifier, the FM modulator may block this power feed and the power feed could affect the FM modulator. It is important to check that the modulator is compatible.

Tim - Thanx for the reply, I've got the 6006 in it at the moment but I've got

a Pioneer 8400 MP3 player in the cupboard screaming to be fitted!!! I was dubious

because of the feeds to the DVD system, is your dvd factory fit or aftermarket?

Did you have any probs sourcing adaptor leads etc ???

MrT - Agreed, a pal of mine had trouble fitting an in-line one to his Audi thats why I was looking out for a wireless one.

My DVD is the factory fit standard system. One or two ICE dealers say that it shouldn't be touched and won't work with any ohter system. My one in SE London took one look at said that it is a just a standard system and did the job no probs. It works, I have a TV tuner with FM modulator so you can watch TV on one screen and listen to it through the stero and watch a DVD on the other and listen through the headsets etc etc etc etc.

In fact I also had this set up going with the standard Ford headunit before I switched it for the Alpine. Only downside is that I have 3 remotes controls now - stereo, DVD and TV

Hi Tim, thanks for the reply, still dubious about dropping the pioneer

into it...still got two years warranty left so unless it is a straight iso

connector adaptor fit (so I can swap the original head unit back

if any probs with the dvd/screens) I'll have to put up with having

loads of discs in the glovebox (and no car racing on the pioneer

screen  )
