Hi

I see other people have had problems with leaks. I've got a 1.9 TDI new shape 2000. I recently found the passenger totally soaked. I had to cut out the under mat rubber & soundproofing stuff and dried it out of a number of days. I found the wheel arch cover was the wrong side so I rectified this and fitted mudflaps.

Well luckily I hadn't reffitted the under mat as this morning the water had come in again :(

So it looks like possibly via the windscreen. I've take off the under arch plastic and found a bag with foam in the wing (possibly soundproffing) which was soaked.

I cannot find the drain hole talked about in earlier posts - older model?

Well looks like i'll be out with watering can tomorrow :(

Any other tips would be welcommed - I've scanned most of the old emails.

Thanks in advance

I've now had the watering can and hose on the car and it seems to be coming from the wheel arch which has a mastic covering on it. The water is coming through the cuts in the mastic cover via a few pin holes.

There seems to be a scuttle drain about 2 inches square and this appears to be clear - there is no flap on it though.

Although I could seal inside the footwell I'm a bit worried that the water will sit behind this mastic covering and rot it.

Any Thoughts welcomed

Cheers

Hi John,

I had the same problem last tuesday. I immediately knew what was wrong due to the good information you can find on www.sgaf.de but you have to know German for that one. The problem you (most likely) have is that the (rain)water that comes of your front windscreen leaks into your ventilation system via the pollen airfilter. This is caused by the fact that the hose through which this water normally flows away is closed due to leaves, mud etc. You can very easily find this hose by opening your bonnet. Between your bonnet and the windscreen there is a black plastic piece (which you also see with the bonnet closed) with holes in it through which your ventilation system gets it's air. Below this piece you'll see your windscreenwhiper mechanism and below that there is a plastic cover which catches all the water that comes in. Behind the windscreenwhiper mechanism you can also see the air cabin filter.

The (rain)water that comes in is lead to the right and left side of the vihicle where it is deposited in your wheel arches. One of these hoses (holes) is probably cluttered with leaves etc. The water cannot escape anymore and will come to a level where it can enter your ventilation system through the air cabin filter.

When you use a watering can you can see how the water is flowing and where the water cannot escape anymore. You need very tiny hands to clean the holes or use a garden spray to clean them

Hopefully this is the solution to your problem

kind regards,

Thanks Jos - I'll give it a look later and let you know how I get on. Yesterday it rained and the leak is just as bad luckly I kept the carpets up.

Well some more hope as I had reached a point where I was at loss what to try next. Fingers crossed!

Right I've pulled out the plastic cover that catches the rainwater and cleaned it up and cleaned up the rubber beading it sits on.

The holes which allow water to go to the wheel arches are well and trully clear.

On the plastic covering which sits on the corner of the windscreen 2 of the clips are broken. These sit in holes in the bodywork round the windscreen. THere seems to be a hole in this part of the bodywork to drain down but I wonder if some water could get in there?

Looking inside the water seems to be getting in somewhere in that large cavity behind the window wiper etc that you cannot get your hand in.

Very very frustrating!!

Just been to the ford dealers to get the corner windscreen cowling and it has been replaced by another part that does not match...oh joy!

I think I'll repace the seal under the cover which sits under the screen washers and goes across the engine comp - real nice thing to get out.

Someone said they got one from a SEAT dealer ?? Do these have the same body parts could I get the windscreen cowling there?

Well its December and I've still got a leak.......................I've had the windscren checked and was told it was the original and the seal is fine.

I tried to change the pollen filter today and couldn't get it out. It looks like I need to remove the wiper linkage, but I cannot face it after a night shift with the daylight running out.

Question - To remove the wiper linkage is it just the 3 bolts with rubber washers at the front? How is it attached at the back it just feels like a rubber grommit.

I've changed the pollen filter on mine and you don't need to remove the washer motor, that said its a pig of a job, two tips watch very carefully how the thing comes out i(it goes in EXACTLY the same way) and be careful of the control wires for the windscreen washer i'e' make sure you don't snag them in the filter holder (like I did !)

Set the wipers so they stick upright on the screen this then moves the linkage out of the way, giving you access to the pollen filter it's still a bit tight but it saves taking things apart!

Well I tried the wipers upright and the cover catches on the rear wiper support. Did you pull it out from the bottom?

Reading other posts it seems some won't come out with loosening removing wiper linkage.

Anybody though about putting the ecu in an adaptable weatherproof box ? You can get them from most diy/electrical wholesalers, I got one, fits nice.... keeps the leccy dry under the seat even if you do happen to have a dodgy leek.

You can remove the pollen filter without removing anything else (apart from the covers), I've done it and have the scratches and bruises to prove it. There is just about enough space and with enough pushing and pulling you can just about do it.
