Barlidge Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 Hi all, I have just bought a second hand Galaxy and I have found a ford inspection report dated 4 weeks before I bought it. One of the things that was mentioned on it was an oil leak from the transmission that requires a chest gasket. Does anyone know where this gasket is and what's involved in replacing this gasket. One of the problems I am experiencing is a loss of drive when when pulling away, this is most noticeable when approaching a roundabout and not fully stopped, when you pull away the revs increase but drive doesn't kick in for 2 to 3 seconds. am suspect that this may be due to the afore mentioned oil leak and that the gearbox is running low on oil. Am I right in thinking that the oil level can only be checked by a dealer. Any thoughts or opinions would be most appreciated. Cheers Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 Chest gasket - slightly lower down the vehicle than a head gasket?Auto or manual transmission, and how old is the car? Quote
Barlidge Posted September 22, 2004 Author Report Posted September 22, 2004 Thanks for the reply, Diesel, Auto, X ( Manufactured 2000) 61000 miles. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 ISTR that oil level on the 2.8 auto box can only be checked by undoing the top-up hole (not easy). Sounds like a torque converter problem if you are getting no drive, rather than a poor gearchange quality. Ford dealers do not have the equipment or training to work on the 2.8's auto box - you need to go to a VW dealer if you cannot get it fixed elsewhere...or was the Ford report you found supposed to list the work that needed doing before the car was sold to you?HTHIvor Quote
Barlidge Posted September 22, 2004 Author Report Posted September 22, 2004 Thanks for the reply Ivor, Have just realised that I had not updated my vehicle type in my profile, have amended now. The report was done when the previous owner last had it serviced at his local ford dealer, the gearbox bit was just one of a few things mentioned. hence I believe the reason for sale. :( :( :( Quote
Guest docker Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 ivor, my 2.8 auto has been doing this for 3 months now.where is the top-up hole so i can check this please ??do you know any way to eliminate between g/box or t/convanything app.thanx PHIL :( sorry to but in on thread Quote
Guest lesmon Posted September 23, 2004 Report Posted September 23, 2004 Had a similar problem. Gears seem to be slipping - engine reving - most noticable when engine is cold. Once heated up everything seem OK The first thing to do on your Autos is to check/topup the tranny fluid. Did this to mines - took a litre of fluid and the problem solved. The Job: Remove bottom cover/shield/ whatever it is called. On the tranny to the front of the car is the filler cap - remove this - I think it just pulls off by hand. Start the car and let it warm up - leave the engine running. To the back of the tranny is the drain bolt - remove this (dont worry no oil comes out because there is also a drain tube in there which stops the oil from coming out). Using an Oil Can with tranny fluid, put oil in the filler hole (careful that the cooling fan as your hand will be right nxt to it) - do this until oil starts coming out of the drain hole - thats when it is at the right level.Put back the drain plug and filler cap.Test DrivePut cover shield back on.
