Guest MackQ Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 What is that "whirring" sound I can hear from underneath my Galaxy on cold mornings? Seems to come from under the middle row nearside (RHD car) area? Vehicle is 1.9TDI. Haven't heard it all summer but it was back this morning! Quote
ALARM MAN Posted September 21, 2004 Report Posted September 21, 2004 Tis the rear heater starting up runs on fuel so if you see smoke after stopping coming from under passenger rear door thats the Heater. Dont run like mad like the missus did  Ian Quote
johnb80 Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 What is that "whirring" sound I can hear from underneath my Galaxy on cold mornings? Seems to come from under the middle row nearside (RHD car) area? Vehicle is 1.9TDI. Haven't heard it all summer but it was back this morning! The TDi engine is so efficient that it doesn't have sufficient waste heat to keep the occupants warm on cold days. An auxiliary heater is fitted underneath that comes on when the engine water temp is less than 90 deg C and the outside temp is less than 11.5deg C, it heats the coolant system directly hence helps the engine and cabin to warm up quicker. The heater uses diesel fuel and sounds like a Jet Turbine which does get some strange looks if you do a short journey because it continues to run for a while to cool down the heater when you switch off. You get some very strange looks from the basball hat clad teenagers with thier Corsa's. Regards - JB Quote
rwtomkins Posted September 22, 2004 Report Posted September 22, 2004 There are many, many previous threads on this if you want to check them out. For some owners, the whirring noise was also accompanied by a constant loud ticking which came from the fuel pump that fed the aux heater (correctly named the booster heater, if I remember correctly). One member reported that Ford had come up with a fix for this, presumably free when done under warranty. I haven't bothered to have mine done yet but maybe when it gets cold enough for it to start bugging me again... By the way, anyone got a copy of the Ford technical services bulletin that describes this fix or know any website where I can see it? Quote

Guest fredt Posted September 26, 2004 Report Posted September 26, 2004 I hope for your sake now thats its not you Air Con that blows up Fredt!! mines serviced every year, just before its really needed, its checked out for leaks, drained down, the gas and oil weighed and then stuck back in and topped as needed, plus its used nearly every time the car is used so hopefully any signs of failure can be picked up early enough and fixed as for the whirring noise! my friend came round yesterday in his TDI, he radiod ahead for landing permission :P his aux heater is rather loud! we are thinging of removing the Ford badge off the rear and sticking a boeing badge on instead! :D Quote
