Towing A Caravan With A 2.0 Galaxy (1996)

We are looking to update our caravan and after looking in the owners handbook it appears that the max permissable towing weight is only 1250 kg for our car (it also shows this to be so in the diesel!!!). However, latest stats show newer galaxy's can tow up to 1800 kg (this being a braked trailer) anyone else encountered this problem I mean you would think that towing safely at 85% meant around 1450 kg towing weight with a galaxy not a mere 1250 kg max! I have e mailed Ford but am still awaiting their response.

I have a '96 2.0 Petrol and will be towing a caravan from next April (for the first time!). I have used the Caravan manufacturers MRO figure as a guide, which for the Bailey Ranger 500/5 model I am going for is about 220kg below the maximum laden weight (1061kg versus 1295kg).
