What you need is a "Scantool" or similar, VAG also have a variety, this is a device similar to the type of device used to download the readings on an electric meter.

This reads memory sectors and stores the information in a manner which gives a list of codes that can be crosschecked against a generic list (European On Board Diagnostics standard) and give information mainly about the running and emmissions of the vehicle.

There are manufacturer based codes for the individual manufacturer to be able to log certain events within the vehicle which have non-standard codes.

The tool connects to a "D" type connector which on later vehicles "must be located such that a crouched technician can see the socket" in the area of the drivers seating area.

Just a little techie info that will help in its basic form.

You remember the BMW style christmas tree of lights that indicated service requirements this is a digitally stored version of this indicator.

Each circuit in the vehicle (electrical) is normally monitored by a CU (Contil Unit) and any event (unusual event in the circuit eg. misfire or fuse blowing) must be logged into an area called "1st Trip", if this event is not cleared during the completion of a drive cylce (start, drive, stop) then the event information if passed into the area known as DTC (the area where codes are stored for later diagnosis).

This enable, theoretically, an inspector at a test station to determine if the vehicle has caused any spurious emmisions due to engine management of such like. Like a remote big brother watching your engine.

Many codes are just for information such as service interval and such like but some are used to determine engine performance and as such will indicate if any additional servicing is required. If you are unsure of the meaning of the codes when you do read them you should always check the manufaturers data base of codes, if possible, as many will be specific to the vehicle.

Soory about the length of this posting but if you do a search on EOBD in this forum I am sure you will find a very detailed description which will indeed be OTT for your needs.

Hope it helps. :o :D

Hi DanB,

For your Galaxy, make sure to get a "ScanTool" that supports J1850 PWM signalling.

Best wishes,

Yuri.
