Interior Lights - Clock, Astray, Sear Selector

Hi,

Driving home last night, very late and very dark, I noticed that the following things diid not light up (and since owning the car for 3 months) can't remember ever seeing them working. They are:

The ashtray or Coin tray - just in from of the gear lever,

THe digital clock - just by the interior rear-view mirror

the Auto-transmission gear selection - in the night I can't tell what I have selected.

So can someone confirm is any/all of these thinks should light up at night, before I start trying to tear things apart to change bulbs (the cause don't seem to be with fuses as I believe I have checked them all.

yep, they should all light up, check that there is a bulb holder actually fitted in the ashtray, open the ashtray, and lift it out, then lift out the second tray, there should be a lamp holder clipped into a mount on the side of the houseing?

digi clock lamp replacement has been covered before in picture form :D as has the gear selector lamp IIRC but not in picture form

I have sorted out the digi clock and the ashtray - somebody used the wrong type of bulbs and they weren't making proper contact. Got the digi clock bulb at Halfords, and made up something for the ashtray - both working.

Now need to find the thread for the gear selector - 'cause I don't know where the bulb is or how to get at it....

Found how to get to the gear selector bulb...finally.

Ford/VW don't try to make things easy, do they? How do I go about changing the bulb?

I have attached a picture below. IT is looking down the gear selector shaft. The bulb and holder is the greenish thingy on the right. It is attached to the arm that goes around the shifter to a connector on the left.

I have managed to take this whole thing out see other photo.

THe question is...do I need to purchase this compelte item - or can it separate further. IT seem to be able to separate but wanted to make sure before proceeding less I break something that can't be repaired.

Shame you just can't change the bulb..it is soldered into the holder.....how crap design is that!!!

hi,i have the same problem, with the auto shift light,it only works when it feels like it,I put it down to a loose connection.I didn't want to mark the plastic around the gear shift stem,so ive left it for now.how did you get the plastic stem apart?

THere is a small screw on the side of the shifter handle - just under the press in button - slacken that and take the top bit of the shifter off

Then pull up the rest of the selector lever trim

Then use a screwdrive to prise up the selector cover...

The you see what I have seen in the photos I posted earlier.

FRedT - Look forward to the results of your search on EKTA (what does that stand for?)

dont ask me! its the VW parts list cd as used by the dealers, I have a Russian web site, that on it you can look through the parts list, its ok looking at the pictures but it's reading the part lists titles and then finding what you want that's the problem! so I bought a copy in English, still none the wiser

Well according to EKTA the lamp holder is available as a seperate item, with a replaceable bulb! ( but dont quote me on that ! I'm still learning my around the EKTA system  )

I found the same thing with the cigar lighter bulb on the Galaxy, from Ford its a one piece part with the bulb fitted and from VW the lamp holder and bulb are two seperate items! it maybe worth your while taking the part to a VW dealers and checking that its the same item? if it is two seperate items if the bulb goes again its should be cheaper to replace that than buying the whole thing again from Ford!

ive just undone mine and replaced the bulb with an led which cost 1.99 at tandy.cheaper than ford's me thinks

did you need to solder in the new bulb to the extension arm bit?

I had a look again today - the bulb in mines is much smaller than the digi clock & ashtray bulbs. may go down the led light route.

hi you could solder, but I just wedged the soldered parts of the wire(I snapped them off the old bulb),into theblack bulb holder part, the led then just slid in and held it all in place.I suppose it depends if you can be bothered to solder,if you wan't a more permanent job.

Where's the Tandy? They all closed down in my part of the world after they were taken over by Carphone Warehouse.

Try Maplin they have shops everywhere nowadays and there also offer online delivery which although specified as several days usually arrives next day at reasonable postage rates.

Merry Christmas Lads,

My bulb failed other night :D, followed instructions but stuck on removing the arm ?, saw a screw which had sealant on it (red) slackened this off but things didn't improve the screw seems left handed or it pulls the assembly downwards when unscrewing the screw ?. anyway it wuldn't come off any advise plz ?.

I am sure I can fix the bulb but don't want to break the holder etc getting it off ?. Whats the red screw sealant for ?, and have I adjusted something which wasn't meant to be adjusted :D

Cheers Si

From the description of this screw in the red sealant and the way it moves the assembly depending on which way you turn it, it sounds like you have adjusted the inhibitor switch! does the car still run? does it only start when the selector lever is in P or D ? if you wiggle the lever while trying to start the car does it not start? you may need to reset the adjuster screw if you have any trouble staring the car!

As far as I know it just pulls off? pull it upwards towards the top of the selector shaft

Hi all,

I'm having problems getting the assembly that houses the gear selector bulb off,

does anyone have any more tips on how to get the complete plastic holder away from the gear lever. Others states it just pulls up but mine don't.

Cheers,

Greg.

First of all, the second photo on the previous page is that of the Auto Gearbox Inhibitor Switch!! The bulb is fixed to the end of the whole switch assembly. According to the Haynes manual, you're supposed to remove the centre console before attempting to remove this switch. On the same side as the bulb, there is a screw embedded in the switch.

Put bluntly, you're not supposed to "screw around" with that screw, as it prevents the motor from starting up whilst the selector button is depressed. After renewing the switch, you turn the screw clockwise until you CAN start the engine whilst the selector button is depressed. Then you turn it anti-clockwise until you CANNOT start the engine whilst the selector button is depressed and a further quater-turn anti-clockwise to be safe!
