The 1.9TDI 130 I bought about a little less than a month ago, was supposed to have been serviced (10k) (including oil change) 3 days before we picked it up. About 1 week after we picked it up I checked the oil and noticed it looked fairly black. Service book was fully completed however

Since this time we have been negotiating with the selling and servicing dealer who swear blind the oil was changed.

Anyone got any views - could they be telling the truth?

HOw can I prove it. Can I take it to a specialist to verify oil age? Anyone know of the cost?

Thanks in advance! :o

My galaxy had first service and when i checked oil same day and about 5 miles later it was black also, I have been told by a mechanic friend of mine ( Seat Trained ) that this is normal for a diesel almost straight away.

Probably cheaper to have the oil replaced at a while you wait service centre than go through the worry and cost of finding out if its old oil

Absolutely - the cost of analysis will be prohibitive! (well, a few hundred quid anyway; try Century Oils  ) and may not tell you how long ago the oil was changed, only its condition. Bearing in mind that if your engine is on variable servicing, the oil will allegedly be "good" for up to 24,000 miles I don't think you have much to worry about. You could get it changed again in say 5,000 miles time just to give you additional peace of mind.

Don't worry, its normal for oil in Tdi's to turn black within milliseconds of starting the engine.

I had the same problem with my (petrol) Spacewagon - as soon as I checked the oil after having it serviced, it was black(ish), however, when ever I changed the oil in my wifes Golf, which incidentally had covered 4 times the mileage, the oil was a perfect straw colour, even after a few days driving.

I put this down to the fact that I was untrained and therefore did unecessary silly things like only change the oil after I heated up the engine, leave it draining for an hour after ensuring that the drain hole was the lowest point. After the hour had passed I was even foolish enough to pour some new oil in to "clean" the resedue out - I'm now pleased to say that I'm far happier paying

The oil on nearly all diesel engines will be blackish, unless its brand new. The main thing to check is that the oil is fluidy and not thick. It is very difficult to completely remove all old oil from a tdi engine, unless you use an engine flush every time the oil is changed. This is unnessessary and the engine runs just as well with regular (10,000) mile oil changes on a VW tdi engine. As long as the correct oil is used (5w40 synthetic) then the engine will run for hundreds of thousands of miles if properly maintained.
