Another?Maybe! Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 As you know, I've just changed my 2.3 to a 130PS diesel. Sometimes, when slowing down for an in-town corner, turning into my drive, etc and dropping into 2nd gear, the engine stalls. I was under the impression from past experience and discussion, that it is impossible to stall a diesel engine... but Gal diesel has proved me wrong and other Gal diesel owners I have spoken to have experienced the same. Need to remember to change driving technique and get some revs on before letting clutch up in these circumstances. But could be quite dangerous... yesterday on M1, pulling into Toddington for a break and negotiating the complicated car parking directions I suddenly found I had no brakes and no steering.... engine had stalled but because was noisy outside I hadn't realised. Just missed one of the concrete walls! Guess if you have auto box this doesn't happen but any other diesel owners had same experience?? Quote
iainkirk Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I've never had that problem. I find it's almost impossible to stall and can only recall doing it once in the last 40,000 miles! I can't believe your Galaxy stalled and you didn't notice. Stalling in gear would cause such a thump from the engine that you would think that something had hit your car. I think you possibly need to get your Galaxy looked at rather than it being your driving technique. Quote
Danny Boy Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I've stalled my Alhambra quite a few times, without a judder!!!! Luckily i've not had a near crash experience!! I did in an old Renault Clio I had once and smashed all the suspension and wheel hitting the corner of a kurb!!! I was under the impression there were un-stallable but abviously not!!! Quote

With all those kids screaming in the back I'm not suprised you couldnt hear the engine! although the constant rattleing and lumpy idle should help you realise the engines running that and the cloud of black crap following you around :( Quote
Guest nelse Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 stalled mine quite a few times when i first had it, case of changing down but still being in too high gear i think, going into 4th instead of 2nd by mistake (poor and lazy driving technique to blame), so when the clutch was released the revs dropped too low, well that's how i interpreted it. Often the only tell tale signs were the lack of power steering, after a few weeks getting used to it havn't stalled it since (well at least it's got me driving properly once again). Quote
Danny Boy Posted September 10, 2004 Report Posted September 10, 2004 Fredt you'll be glad to know number 8 is now on its way!!! :P B) :o :o The Waltons spring to mind!!! :P :P Quote

italiastar Posted September 11, 2004 Report Posted September 11, 2004 I also stalled mine many times when I first got it - usually just after changing down to say 2nd on a roundabout. As you say you get a VERY large thud!! when this occurs. It still happens sometimes, but I have never stalled my wife's Fabia which has the same 130bhp engine. Glad to see I'm not alone, however is it something we should get looked at? Quote
Danny Boy Posted September 12, 2004 Report Posted September 12, 2004 I dont get time for hobbies funnily enough!!! Telly's boring anyway!! The soaps are too depressing!! everyone dying or getting a divorce!!! Will have to get the wife to do more housework so it keeps her busy!!! :D Quote
Guest SA Intruder Posted September 13, 2004 Report Posted September 13, 2004 52000 miles and never stalled. Suggest you get it looked at under Warranty. Quote
Guest Andyb Posted September 14, 2004 Report Posted September 14, 2004 Mine is the same just give it a bit more revs and it seems to be ok the wife stalled it 4 times the pther morning B) B) Quote
Guest lnparkin Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I think it must be something to to with the VW PD TDI 130 engine, it seems to have no power low down in second gear, our '04' plate passat is always doing the tell tale clunk as we go up the drive. Its fine if you boot the throttle but cant do it on its own. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 115 and 130; I kept stalling my 115 when I got it, having come from a Renault direct-injection 1.9 diesel; the Renault's anti-stall is much better, presumably increasing the fuel delivery more when it senses the engine is under load with no throttle; the VW PD engine requires the accelerator pedal to be pressed else it will just cry "enough" and let the engine stall.I've got used to it now though :D Quote
italiastar Posted December 27, 2004 Report Posted December 27, 2004 I still stall mine from time to time - last time yesterday. My wife has the same engine in her car (tuned by Skoda) and we've never stalled it. Surprisingly the car (Fabia) is not half the weight despite being half the size. Quote
