Guest nelse Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Well my run of poor luck with my galaxy gathers pace, whilst enjoying a weekend away my nephew managed to hit the car with a kite. Luckily i suppose he hit the rear quater window rather than any bodywork, the one with the arial in, scratching it quite badly, it was really noticable and was wondering if anybody knew if the glass could be polished, I understand it may be laminated glass so may have a softer face than normal glass so would like some advice if anyone has any to give, I could try some 3 micron diamond paste we have at work (equivalent to about 6000 wet and dry) but would prefer to find out if anyone knows of a proper product which is designed to polish car glass. Someone suggested safe cut and it's worked well at hiding the scratches so that's it's nowhere near as noticable but it's still there. My guess is it'll be expensive to replace if it comes to that. My brothers so tight can't see him forking out. Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 Have you tried Brasso which I think has been suggested before? I've never managed to find anything that will take a scratch out of glass :( Quote
_dg Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 http://www.speed-demon.supanet.com/glasspol.htm I have not used it though. Do a uk google on " glass polishing compound " Quote
Topbloke Posted September 2, 2004 Report Posted September 2, 2004 i have seen scratches polished out off w/screens but if it is too deep it distorts, with this being a side window i dont think that would be a problem we use a small local independant windscreen repairer try yellow pages . ps a new/ second hand window should not be that expensive compared to a polish . they are very easy to remove (window) 2xtorx screws and a philips and two people if you want to know how just ask Quote
Richmond Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 There are products available which fill in scratches on glass, rather than polishing them out; it's the same principle by which a wet glass doesn't look scratched even though it is. It might affect the optical properties of the glass if the scratch is really deep, but presumably that won't matter much on a rear quarter. You can get this product for specs, I think, so if you have no luck in Halfords, you could try Specsavers :D . Quote
Guest nelse Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 think i've got it sorted, 45micron diamond compound on a felt pad appears rough enough ot actually polish the glass and remove the scratches, but fine enough that it doesnt mark the glass in a way that's visable. had a bit of a play with some today, started with 3micron and worked through 6micron and 14 to find which was the best compromise, may take a while to manually polish the scratches out so maybe will use a diprofil tool polishing machine with a felt bob to speed things up, knew being a metal finisher would have some use again one day. lastime was polishing the exhaust ports on my RS2000 over 15 years ago Quote
