It seems obvious that the oil level on the dip stick should be between the min and max marks...........but............my Ford dealer has recently done me an oil and filter change, the oil appears to be above the max marker, over the ridge of the dip stick.........is this OK, or is there too much oil in there, if so what can I do ?? Will it cause engine or CAT damage ? or do VW have a tolerance built into the level that allows maybe a little too much to be OK ??

I assume you checked the level with the vehicle standing on flatish ground and with a cold engine. If you did and it is still above give the dealer a b*ll*cking and get him to drain the excess at once.

Is there advice in your handbook on overfilling? I believe TD engines are particularly prone to damage from this.

I would also be an idea to complain to the dealer in writing, in case of future problems.

Too much oil. Tell them to drain some off.

Caused by them putting the entire 5 litre container in I imagine, rather than the correct amount.

Thanks for that, they have used 5w30 oil on the receipt. The woman on reception said they use semi-synthetic oil in all their servicing for all cars, leading me to think that they have a general drum they use for all oil changes........and that they don't use containers.......so I think not only its the wrong oil but also too much of it.......

Depends on how much over the MAX mark it is - there will be a tolerance so I never worry if the oil is slightly over. I would tend to agree with your thoughts that the wrong oil has been used though. Ford SD or VW spec 505.01 and nothing else.

So, lets say the level is OK, as it's only just over the max, will the oil thats been put in (if its wrong) cause damage, or does it just mean that the engine may not perform quite as well as the recommended stuff ? I think I'll change it myself in future ! Where do you buy the correct oil (5 litres ?) VW or Ford ??

Ford dealers don't know jack about what oil should go in the TDI Galaxy. I telephoned 3 in my local area and they all insisted on using 5W30 Semi-Synthetic.

Despite quoting the VW505.01 spec and also WSSM2C917-A spec they just said that their oil "would do the same job" and if I was to get it serviced that's what oil I would get. What is their problem??

I advise everyone to double check what oil they are putting in (as well as the amount!)

the hand book should tell you the capacity of the sump with and without filter change, if that exact amount is fitted it may be slighly above the mark , an over fill is not to bad for a petrol engine but can be very scary if a diesel, it can be sucked up by the turbo and then the engine runs away (very very scary)If they charged you for 5 litre and the sump only takes 4.75 then you have to much in the engine and you have been over charged . the other alternative is to supply the oil your self and demand the can back with whats left in the can, or d i y

DIY I think is the only option, but surely this shouldn't be the case in this day and age, you pay thousands for a car thats cost millions to develop and the dealer doesn't even know what oil to use, or how much to put in.

Decided to take Galaxy to my local Ford Rapid Fit centre, I got them to put the correct oil in Ford SD 5W40, even watched them do it so in future I can do it myself ! They did a good job of it.......
