Hi, While out last wk i had a puncture, wound the nut to release the spare wheel and the wheel lowered about 6inches. After much mauling (see title description) i finally got the spare wheel off the cable and changed the puncture, threw everything in the back of the car and tried to wind the spare wheel cable up, it would not move, so i wound it round itself and drove home. I removed the spare wheel retaining mechanism at home and tried to get the thing to work, it will not.

Any comments please?

Are there any other fords that have the wheel hung below the body and if so what is the method of holding the spare wheel, I would like to adapt it to the Galaxy

I found the winch very tempremental sometimes it would wind on and then not :(

The wire rope is too short - the handbook shows the removal position for the spare wheel as being with the wheel vertical in front of the back bumper(ie to the rear of the car).

Some chance! I can't get the spare wheel less than 5-6" off the floor under the car, let alone towards the bumper. A design fault I think!

I will be requesting the cable is changed for a longer one under warranty at next service.

Mine's longer than yours! I can just about get the tyre beyond the rear bumper. Is your cable snagging on the drum, perhaps.

It is a totally crap design.

Hi,The time before last that i changed the spare the cable allowed the wheel to stand up by the rear bumper so there was no mauling under the car.

Not so this time.

Same as most thing if it works it is good.

The spare wheel winch on my Galaxy has just packed-up. Had a puncture the other day, wound the spare down, felt and heard the cable 'gauling' in the drum. Managed to wind the cable back up to within a few inches of it's stowed position before it siezed up solid!

Rang Remoco to price up a replacement and the guy just laughed! Reckoned they get about 3-4 requests a week for these winches!

For a mechanism that probably only gets used a couple of dozen times over the life of a car, this failure has to rank as, at best, piss poor! I can only assume that water ingress has corroded the cable to such an extent that it will no longer function.

The cable is stainless steel so should not rust - what is the rest of the mecahnism made from? I have to agree that this winch is the worst method of retaining a spare wheel that I have come across. I make sure I exercise mine every few weeks when I check the tyre pressures (including the spare).

i had to take mine up & down about 4 times when i did mine.

i think the cable winds itself up just on one side of the drum and locks up

prematurely.

try nudging the wheel with your knee on the way up, it worked for me anyway.

hope this helps you

stupid question but the wheel is the right way up ?????

i put it on stud holes UP and cable was indeed too short!

turned it over and o.k.
