Hi, tried to get registered for ages and finally sorted it out today...put it down to AOL, so set up everything through MSN.

Anyway here goes;

I've had my galaxy for 18 months now, and too be honest, love it! Its the first diesel i have had and the only thing i had to complain about was it has never had any guts, i've had tractors passing me on hills etc!!!

Never the less, i tolerated this not knowing any better, until......my father borrowed it for a few days (RAC patrolman for 35 yrs) and told me to get it to my local for dealer to check the turbo. which i did, and they basically gripped the leads and were happy all was ok there, put it onto there diagnostic machine which showed no fault, so they suggested a new turbo any how...mmmm, i though, i'll research this one...where i found this site.

after reading that this was a common problem i tried diconnecting the maf sensor and the tranformation is unbelievable!!! it now goes like a ferrari compared to before.

so onto trying to get the part;

I saw on this site a lad recommended S.A.M.E.ltd, i gave them a phone and was quoted

I think it is time for us (as a forum) to get in touch with Bosch and buy

a job-lot of MAf sensors cos all us oilburners will need one sooner or

later.....

New maf sensor arrived from GSF yesterday, took about 10 minutes to fit (damn that bloody rubber ring seal!!!) And the performance is great!!! i think it may even be better than what it was when i was running about with the sensor disconnected???

All for the reasonable price of

Clanman,

Can you just let me know how many connector pins there were/are on the connector to the MAF sensor? Am currently having my Alhambra sorted with a new sensor and the mechanic is having some trouble getting one with only 4 pins attached - recommended (based on chassis number) VW part 06A-906-461 has 5 pins which I'm told won't work.

Thanks!

Just as a side issue iirc the maf sensors have a self cleaning system when the ignition is switched off the ecu should power the maf sensor and heat the wire element (like a light bulb ) which self cleans ready for the next time I wonder if this is the difference between 4 pin and 5 pin and if so i wonder if this is a mod (by the makers) for the later cars

The self cleaning function only applies to old wire type sensors, the Tdi is fitted with a Bosch film sensor with integrated electronics, there is no cleaing function on this as it would fry the electronics...Bosch evidently think the much larger area of the film sensor coupled with the lower running temperature should lead to longer life :blink: :lol: :lol:

Watch this space [ :blink: ]

Hi Braggit, the part number you have is correct, it is a five pin, but one is blocked off! order from gsf as i did, i looked everywhere and they were the cheapest, good easy site to use

heres the info;

AIR MASS METER SH 1.9 TDi 98> (Ch.7M-W-020 001>) AVG/AHU/AFN Engs. 85.00

18790 this is the part number for GSF.

hope this helps mate!

All the best

Where can I find this maf? My Alhambra has always been horribly sluggish. The local Ford dealer has had it for a total of 8 weeks in the last 2.5 years trying to find out why. I've searched the forum but "maf" is less than 4 letters and the search function doesn't want to know.

A photo would be great if anyone has the time. I've got a late '97 1.9TDi 90.

Hi All - latest update on my MAF problem:

The independent dealer agreed to sort this under their 3-month warranty using their own mechanics.

Went in for a new MAF sensor today, part sourced by their mechanic who had to wait for the part on back order from SEAT - cost them

Isn't this wierd... found out today that my boss's boss sold his Galaxy - he did mention that it wouldn't go up hills at all. B)

First thing that came into my mind was the MAF - didn't say anything though, 'cos I wasn't sure and anyway it was too late. :P

Just goes to show how useful this forum is - pity he didn't find it himself! :o

Checked the MAF sensor connection at the weekend - new part has 5 pins, same as the VW part I bought for around
